Wow, that's some nasty air to race in. With weather like that I'll sit in the stand and eat popcorn.
Its been that way all summer here….like walking thru a sponge.

They just canceled all weekday TNT's at our local track because of local complaints, court case. And, I was going today to test the new Vikings. Now it is going to Michigan Supreme Court.
Hopefully the RIGHT guys are sitting on that court lol if they're on the same team as that governor of yours there forget about it

To be clear, I’ll share the bad with the good.

it was a rough day for “Project run 11s with 2.56 gears and stock torque converter.” Bolted on a set of 15x8 Rallye wheel shod with 275/60-15 Mickey Thompson ET Street SS tires, hoping to lay down my best 60’, subsequently inch closer to the 11s time slip.

Well, part of the plan went correctly. Although I did achieve my best 60’ of 1.95s, it’s at least a 1/10 slower than expected. While it’s possible I was overly optimistic about what is achievable with 2.56 gear and a stock torque converter, I highly doubt it.

The first 2 to 3 feet felt amazing, but the grin quickly turned to disappointment as the engine was laboring, almost as if it was running on 7 cylinders (rough and all). Top end mph is also off, lacking about 50 hp. All this, in 3300’ DA, but offset by the fact I did trailer to the track (which is quite unusual) but allowed for a cool engine on the first pass.

To offer clarity, the problem started, after rebuilding the front suspension and changing the oil. A strange noise has crept in, and I’ve yet to diagnose it. The noise is definitely more audible in neutral, disappearing with the transmission in gear. Converter bolts are verified to be tight, and there’s no metal in the oil.

I do have a header leak, and a few sparks plug wires are suspect. despite this, all the plugs looked tan and even. Yet, the engine has a misfire at idle. I’m going to run a compression test and scope the cylinders and see if anything pops up. Then I’ll go ahead and change the plugs and wires.

Add to this, the transmission is definitely knocking on heavens door

Power Tour (8/23) is now questionable. Details to follow.

When you get in air that is 3300ft. take some jet out of the car. Are those 2" Hookers on that car?

Sounds like you're leavin off idle ?
You tried leavin at 15 or 1800 ?
What rpm you shift at in that last run ?
That shift sounds lazy . That a stock tranny ? How many miles on the tranny ?

Heres a take from zero track experience but a whole lot of driving experience.
That car
Minus the adverse weather conditions
Plus leaving at 1800
Plus shifting about 500 later
Plus a good automatic tranny guy gettin in there to get rid of the puke shift
= 11.97 ET

Still running that hei?

I don't think he has a tachometer in his car.

That's right ...nope he doesnt.
Pretty cool to even get mid 12's with a stock drive line on a crap day and with no tach in a 3800 lb beast lol
Sounds like a 5200 shift . 54 ish maybe??
I like the whole idea of running fast with taller gear . Cool stuff . Theres tall and then theres 256 looking down like mutombo lol
Sure don't seem like its gonna take a whole lot more to be successful in the run 11's with 256 project .

Ya that's pretty good for sure. I have only run 2.56 gears at the track one time and it was 1/8 mile. Car ran 8.35@81mph but I did beat the crap out of my buddies '68 Camaro that had a nice 350 and 4.56 gears in it, he was pretty pissed off. I found a 2.56 rear end for my Camaro but the guy thinks it worth $300 and because it's not IMO I only offered him $100 for it. Would love to try it again but I will not use a stock converter ever again. You can break them by looking at it.

Yes, Hooker 2455 2” with 3” Torque Tech pipes to the bumper. Flowmaster 70 Series big-block mufflers.

Hope you are keeping a data log of weather, track conditions, etc.
If you are using the drag radials make sure you don't get too low on pressure.
I have run 21-22 at some tracks.
Get a good tire gauge that goes to 30 psi. It will give you more detailed readings. Joe's Garage with swivel ends and glows in low light.
Yeah, I pay attention every pass, and have air density online to get the hour-by-hour air data for any track.

I ran the front tires at 45 and rear at 24. It didn’t spin, so I’ll bump the rear tires up a couple psi when I head back to the track. I intend to run the maximum pressure which works.

What George said…the best weather we had this year was when we had the front end out of the car. I’m a fluffy active guy, it’s not pleasant.

Come on ! A 12.40 at 3400' and 90% humidity and your complaining? lol
How are the DR?
We gotta get that 60 in the 1.60's and 11's!
I was hoping for much more. My preparation (lack of) is glaring. I need to do better.

The drag radials are great, but I’d think they’re overkill on a nicely prepared track and a car that’s hallways put together correctly. I’d guess I could’ve went 1.95s 60’ on the 225/70-15 with the updated front and rear suspension, if the engine was running correctly. I’m always more impressive to see an 11s, or even a low 12s, pass on stock tires. I had the drag radials on for the postponed Airport Drags, which is an unprepared surface. I won’t run the ET Streets at a track unless need.

I repeat myself about changing body bushings. Have you did that. I coated my neoprene bushings in dry molly and have never had a squeak. My bushings were a joke, but they were original.
When I get to that point, I’ll raise the body up enough to clean and paint the frame, and install a one-piece 1/2” fuel line from the tank.

I set the idle set at about 750 tpm (verified with digital timing light, since I haven’t installed a tach yet). I’d guess the staged rpm was about 1200 rpm.

No idea about shift rpm but on one of the runs, I did shift noticeably higher and prayed second gear hit) completely stock transmission - slipping horribly between gears. 110,500 miles on the transmission.

I’m guessing 11.8-11.9, without raising the shift points, but with a good transmission (not slipping). L The suspension updates should allow me to hammer it out if the hole. The 4275lbs became 4100 lbs when I’m not toting my son. The 12.29 should also drop nicely when we have some 200-500’ air, instead of the 2300’ (or 3400’) lol
