I need a valve spring & retainer recommendation for a pair of Sportsman II 200cc heads I have on hand. I believe they will accommodate up to a 1.4X" dia spring as is and have standard length valve stems.
I'm building a mild, 9.5CR SBC 388" using a later model 1pc seal 350+.060 block that has the factory roller setup AND a mechanical fuel pump boss.
I will be using a new Reed hyd roller cam that I already have. Since Reed is gone I cannot call them directly for a recommendation.

Grind: 335-TM278HR-TM284HR-110A2 (Serial# M5548)
Year: 1987-1999
Running Duration: IN: 278.0 EX: 284.0
Lobe Lift: IN: 0.340" EX: .0340"
Valve Lift: IN: 0.510 EX: 0.510 w/1.5 rockers
Duration @ .050: IN: 226.0 EX 232.0
Lobe Center: 110

The cam card...

Im in the process of doing something similiar. Still debating if we want to go 383 or 355.

What kind of rpm band are you expecting in the 388 with that cam?

Street cruiser build?

Bill, call Chris Straub.. he'll hook you up with a better spring than Comps, at probably a better price.

Those Torque masters were awsome lobes. The heads should be cut for a 1.260" or you can go with the 1.440" OD Dual. A super clean 1.260" on that lobe will be fine though.

Steve Demos is still around and grinding. He can answer any questions about that lobe. I useded it quite a bit in marine applications.

Chris,
I've been saving this cam for something special. Recently got a great deal on a pair of 64cc chamber 200cc Sportsman II heads and figured I'd run them thru the machine shop to clean up and a spring upgrade.
Just looking for a recommendation on a set of springs, retainers, and locks compatible with the specs outlined on this cam card shown above.

Does Demos have the masters for the Torque Master HR lobes? I really like the Reed Hyd FT I have in my 327 - wouldn't mind running Reed lobes on my current 350 HR build.

Hey BillsCamino... I am also using a 12cc dish in my 350. I chose the Speed Pro H815ACP hypers. These are Vortec replacements with the metric rings. Cheap way to get a modern thin ring pack in an old 350. Mine is still in the 'build phase' right now. The speed pro plasma moly rings are only $75 at Amazon, and Summit sells the pistons for ~$191.

Please don't request parts pricing/parts wanted/parts for sale on the tech forums.

the cam card wants 120-130 seat, 300 open at .510 lift. that would be about 350lbs/in rate, pretty light spring. the Comp 987-16 is real close to that, like 370, shim it a little, maybe 1.775 instead of 1.800. give a little extra to account for settling in after a few thousand miles. Or Chris probably has something better for less.
