My setup is 9:8 comp 396/now 402 basically stock with a mild hyd perf flat tappet perf cam,tweaked q-jet,warmed over ign system,stock ex manifolds, 2.5 " head pipes,slowmasters(LOL!!!),2.5" tailpipes,3:31's/m20/26" tires.
I just went 193 miles (approx 60 miles were on the interstate cruising at 65mph @ 2900rpm) & the other 133 miles were in town stop & go whicle driving to local car cruises/shows) on 14.4 gals fuel = 13.4mpg.
That 13.4 mpg also included 1 i cant resist blowing off my friend in his 5.0 stang with slowmasters & 5spd by twisting my baby rat to 5,500 rpms in 1st/2nd/3rd gears before backing off after i got into 4th to make sure he was left far enough behind to embarass him. Yeh i have more cubes but my car is also substatially heavier too evening up the power to weight a little but likely not all the way. But it was fun anyway to see the FORD QUICKLY fading in my rearview mirror.(LOL!!!!)
I thinks that's not too bad for no o/d trans with a mild 396/402 or maybe it isnt which is why i am asking what other peoples mpg is with their non OD setups. But i know i could get 14+mpg in mixed driving if i removed the hd/ac fan clutch that is locked up at lower temp for better cooling and reinstalled the std duty fan clutch that isnt locked up as much. I bet i could even get maybe 15+ mpg if it was just over all the road cruising on the interstate at 60-65mph tops.
But is the mpg i am getting really not the good for the setup i have,i think its decent but maybe not. My friend has almost the exact same setup in 70 ss with same comp motor/cam/tweaked qj-et/gear/m20 and headers for better breathing and he said he got approx 10-11mpg when he checked it in same approx driving cond as i was driving because we frequent many of the same shows/cruises.
