Whats the deal with the guides? I did a search and found that after 2 years Bob had to replace the guides in his heads. So after 3 years I start pulling springs off my RR-O heads for new ones and the guides are badly worn. I used an adj pushrod to check the geometry and got it as good as I possibly could so I am shocked to see these things this worn out. Engine has about 630 passes on it but I would just assume valve guides wouldn't be an issue like this. But seeing Bob had to replace his made me feel slightly better. Measuring the clearance using the valve rock method and dividing by 3.5 I get about .0068 clearance:sad:.
So I have to pull the heads now. But my question for you Bob is about your statement about seals. You said it was recommended to you to not run the seals on the exhaust side (which I have heard also), and to run the seals loose on the intake side or also no seals on the intake side. What did you do? And how do you run the seals loose? Do you just pull the little springs off the seal?
I didn't feel like this much maintenance over the winter
