I get what you are saying Gene but if you read the article you posted this what it also said:

There is, however, a better way to adjust the valves with a "30-30" - you can set them "cold and not running"
Brother I did it once. Runining solid . Never again. Hydraulics, sure, with those little clip-on thingies on you could get all 8 on the bank done in a few minutes. Now, I prefer the utter precison of EO-IC. don't dig hot oil. But, the oil-slingers are not totally wrong or misguided. Just not so "modern and high speed" is all.

But it was " the correct method" up thru maybe 1975 or so....... from The General hisself..... that was my point.

His article said the "Better way to adjust the valves" is cold and not running. I'm not just talking about GM, I'm talking about all types of engines. Sure GM said you could do it the messy way, but they also pointed out that it wasn't the best way.

The 30-30 is a solid lifter cam and this entire discussion revolves around hydraulic lifters, as the OP has in his motor. It is also true that most can grinders specify that lash be set on solid lifter cams HOT.

Setting them hot is fine. You have to set any cam cold to start with or you wouldn't be able to run the engine to get it warm. Gene was just pointing out the procedure with that particular cam. The same method applies when adjusting valves. You don't need to adjust valves on a running engine.

AND FURTHERMORE.... :) ..... as I dont dig HOT engines, I ALWAYS checked cold lash overnight after setting it hot. And from then on, on that particular engine combo alone, I would always, and have to this day, set lash COLD.

AS I will contnue to do. COLD + EO-IC - the "gentlemen's way" ! ( but it dont make me any better than a hydraulic cam oil slinger!)

You seem to get it.

HA! Dave is like that on the phone with you if you say some dumb shit! Don't mean he is wrong. But it does take a thick skin to tolerate.

HEY EVERYONE...... not to get "political" here, but it seems to me that we are all ( and I mean the globe, not just here) sort of on "pins and needles". Everyone seems WAY MORE uptight than in 1995. Why?? Post-covid detachment, etc, that can be debated in a POLTICAL forum.

Yet empricially, in terms of living our lives....especially with folks and/or communities we like to be a part of,..,.,. we ALL need to practice more civility towards each other.

As civility is what the " end of dharma" times are sucking out of us. At least here at TC, lets TRY and try and be MORE civil even than we are towards one another.

HEY TEXAS SQUIRREL..... some of my favorite " civility" role models as a kid were the WB TEXAS GOPHERS! :) I kid you not..

It’s not what you are saying it’s how you say it in a insulting way. We have seen members like you that may have been very qualified and knowledgeable and two in particular, one a professional painter and another an ignition specialist and neither are members anymore. It’s too bad because they could have been very helpful to all members. We have a lot of expert machinist, engine builder and other specialists that do just that which is they help people. If you want to be part of a great group of people we welcome all but one requirement the attitudes must be checked in at the front door. Your decision, do you want to be part of the team or just to try and impress yourself because as you can see with todays many post you aren’t making any friends.

Naw, TS I'm sure it is, and you arent wrong, but you do sometimes come across very antagonistically. like me saying to my kid " what are you fng STUPID!?" kind of thing. This is particualrly true in the case of the many new owners we have here, many of whom didnt grow up wrenching on old iron like us OFs. Even with that I asked a ton of stupid questions when I was sorting out my 67 twenty years ago. Other than folks like Ed Bigley ( theres always a few) , everyone here was civil about my ignornace.

I'd like to think that new Chevelle owners, born after 1980 let's say, are very welcome here with their "stupid" questions.

Gene you and I go back 6 years or so and you may have your way of putting things in your special language at times but you are very friendly and always willing to help when you can. I am happy to call you a friend and glad you are here.

Guys, I haven't followed this whole thread and I really don't want to be quick to take sides either. But please keep in mind that some of us tend to "dumb it down" when we type out our replies just in case the OP in question is a novice, but also for the benefit of others reading along who themselves might be novices. But that doesn't have to mean that we're trying to talk down to anyone when we offer basic advice or instruction in our replies. I hope we can all get back to the OP's rocker arm issue and leave it at that.
