The switch goes back through the hole in the dash and comes out behind the instrument panel.
A hint to help reinstall the new switch I learned by experience.
Before you remove the switch, fasten a piece of wire, I used #16 gauge solid, to the switch shaft. I used black electrical tape. Then push the switch back through the dash hole. Using the wire, gently push and also reach behind the dash and find the wires to the wiper switch and pull slowly out from on top of and behind the instrument panel. Disconnect the switch wires, the washer ring that makes the ground contract on the switch shaft and also remove the wire you fastened to the switch shaft. Install the wires onto the switch, put the ground washer over the shaft and then tape as tightly as you can the wire to the shaft. Feed the switch back up behind the instrument panel by pushing from below and also pulling gently on the wire you attached to the switch shaft. When you get it to the hole in the dash, you probably will have to rotate the switch to get it to line up in the proper orientation with the dash hole. Pull it through the hole and slide the nut over the wire and screw the nut onto the shaft, By having the wire attached to the switch before you take it out allows you to feed back through the original path. I also used the snap ring pliers to take the nut off and then put back on.
p.s. It also helps to have long arms or another person in doing this.:hurray: One guiding the switch back into position and the other pulling gently on the wire.
Notice how many times I used gently on pulling on the wire. If it comes off the switch shaft, then the fun begins!!
Hope this helps.
