Sometimes my computer won't shut down, it hanges up at the
Windows (shutdown) screen. At that point I have to manually turn it off. A couple of times I've had to unplug it!
I believe this is a Win98se issue as a friend is having the same problem with his computer.

Don't bother unplugging, just hold the power button down for 5 seconds or until it shuts off.
One of my machines does the same thing and has done it for a couple of years. All I do is wait til the HDD light quits fiddling and shut it off.

mine just had this problem, running windows 98. my problem seemed to be the klez virus. I bought an updated virus scan and had 13 files infected. I cleaned it up and shutdown was not a problem anymore.

Thanks for your help guys, but problem solved

I had a friend take a look at it and resolved the issue.
Evidently there was a conflict between the sound card & video drivers. I don't know how to explain it other than it works great now.
He also installed the latest video driver for the G-Force 4 (440-MX)
He ran this neat virus checker that seeks out almost ALL known virus's. He has to keep up on that sort of stuff since he is computer repair technician.

There is a known problem of win98SE not shutting down properly and hanging. There is a file "supplement" on the "upgrade windows" site (gateway has it on their restoration CD).

It's a common enough problem, I have had a few that do, and a few that don't - just download the file from the upgrade site.

Also, using a windows exit soundfile and having your anti virus scanning floppy drives on exit will cause this as well. I always kill the exit sound file for this reason. If its corrupted it will hang the machine. Just an FYI, i know its already fixed.

And yeah, the best answer is dump 98 for atleast Win2K.
