Can someone tell me/show me where this switch goes? Is this the clutch safety or reverse light switch? If not can someone show me where those go?

Car is a factory 4 speed

And if working properly the car should not start unless the clutch pedal is pushed down. A good safety feature to have.

Ok so it is the clutch safety switch. Does anyone have a picture of where it goes?

Does anyone have a picture of the reverse light switch for a 4 speed?

And what are we working on? Skylark?

The switch appears to be one for an earlier car.
If you do a google search on this site, you can see how the 70-72 ones fit, look like and mount. They are available as Repros from most places.

I've searched and can not find any pictures how how they fit. I see what they look like.

Sounds like you need to buy an assembly manual. It has drawings of the parts and where/how they were attached to the car. Available from all the reproduction supply houses.

Take a close look at this picture: http://www.71protouringchevelle.com/121005-07.JPG You will see the switch mounted to the hangar bracket for the clutch & brake pedals. On your car, look for two holes, one that accepts a self-tapping screw and the other that a small tab on the bracket slides into to prevent rotation. Put simply, the clutch pedal arm swings in & out, making contact with the end of your switch, opening & closing a circuit inside the switch. Your heavy purple wires will connect to the switch. Others are correct though, your switch is not the '72 version...I believe it is from '69. Mine is mounted to the clutch/brake assembly in a '71. All the pedal mounts should have the holes I'm referring to, and the switch should work fine.

I have an assembly manual but was having a hard time with this switch and the reverse switch.

Riskyvt thank you for the picture that makes it a lot more clear.

Now if I can just figure out the reverse light thing.

The back up light switch is on the steering column, a back drive rod turned the column to both turn on the lights and allow the switch to be turned to lock.

I use a Muncie M-20 in one of my cars. We mounted a spring-loaded plunger style switch on a light gauge steel bracket at the back of the shifter adjustment bolt. It gets contacted by the reverse lever on the Hurst Competition Plus shifter and completes the circuit. Here's a picture: http://www.72chevelless.com/072801-28.jpg

Riskyvt I like the look and simplicity of that reverse switch. I'll have to do some looking to see if my column mounted one is there if it isn't I might look into something like you did and just use a micro switch.
