just seeing what people who do more with less are capable of?

mild to wild modifications OK.

Here's a pic of the dyno sheet for my 468 with a flat tappet cam and iron oval ports. Don't know if it impresses anyone or not. I built it in my garage a while back, don't know how it runs, the car is a good ways from being finished.

I am in the middle of bodywork but switched to a solid roller and Brodix BB-O and didnt's see major improvement. oval bbc iron heads with the right setup will serve you well....don't be misled....mind you i still have some tweaking to do but you can produce some serious power with with iron ovals.....

John it's somewhere between 13 to 13.5 to one. I didn't bother to cc the heads after I got them back from the machine shop. He told me we could take 1 cc with every .008 of cut. They started at 116 so I'm sure they're a little under 114 after the .029 cut. Maybe I'll drag it down there to sea level one of these days and see how she'll really run. I'm giving up about six tenths here. I've been to Spring once for a graduation. That place is growing way to fast for a hayseed like me. Really like that Red Chevelle. I'm building an ugly old 80 malibu. Those old classics are getting to hard to find and way to expensive to make a drag car out of. We used to have lots of those old muscle cars here, don't know what happened to all of them. I was told people from up north came here and snatched all of these good rust free cars up.

Larry, yeah, the Spring/Woodlands area is just an extension of Houston now. I can drive from my house to my Mom's place on Galveston Bay (about 80 miles) and it's just continuous city/suburbs. Midland is 'Up There" for sure. I hear you on the $$$ to buy these old heaps. Unless it's a #'s matching deal, they're generally a losing investment. I figure about 50 cents on the dollar for my 67 if I were to sell it. Of course, the flip side is buying them 50c on the $. which is what I did with my 69 c-10. I'm going back thru the 67 right now and spending a TON of money, but it's what I want and I'll be keeping it, so be it.

Sorry for the digress.

Please see if you can hunt through the archives for Ed's, (aka, racer1320), combination back when he had worked over -215's on his 468.

They propelled his porky Red '68 Chevelle deep into the 10's!

Or would somebody please post it up! I had it but my 'puter dumped at least twice and I lost ALL my stuff!

Paul, that's an EXCELLENT example of what can be done when you spend THOUSANDS $$$ on a set of iron oval ports with SS porting & epoxy work with matching "welded, ported, & epoxied" intake. And then pass it off as a bracket combo.:rolleyes:

John,

I did NOT know that so thanks for telling us.

I guess that I would go w/ a set of Merlin ovals then.

And I did on my 496.

Paul, if you want to know what can be done with a set of iron heads with good port work without all the epoxy/welding & $$$, look at what VortecPro (Mark Jones) does with them. Very impressive on what I'd call a small dime.

The heads on my 468 have no welding or epoxy in them. They would be illegal for the class I plan on running with it. I may be off my rocker, but I think the motor could make near 700 h.p. with a roller and dominator. The heads were done by a friend who basically does it for a hobby and little extra spending money. I've probably got around 1800 bucks in them but they have some pretty nice parts in em. You could get out a little cheaper. They have new bronze guides, ferrea valves, 10 deg. locks, steel retainers, port work , flat cut. I used them mainly since I didn't have a choice. The rules call for iron production heads, no square ports.

A mild combo I did a for a friend of mine a few years ago that is a little different.

-427 +.030'', TRW L2268F, 10.0 CR, forged crank, truck rods
-049 heads, with 2.19/1.88 minor bowl work unported runner 295Cfm Good port
-Isky 238/248, .570''/.600'', 110* HYD RR with SLD RR lifters
-RPM non air gap, 850 Dp

No dyno test engine went into a all steel full interior 1969 Nova street driver with a mild steel cage ran 11.20's @121MPH with 3.55 gears, TH400, 10 converter, 750 CFM carb, just recently he switched to 4.10 gears and the 850 Dp now runs 10.80's at 124 MPH. I think with a 8'' converter, and tuning there is easy mid 10's in the car. All runs were at Famoso Raceway, Ca.

On the small block ss stuff there is only 1 reason they weld/epoxy them,,, to get the runner large enough they would be higher than the 165cc limit (on small block 291 heads) so they weld/epoxy the runners into an oval port so they can have the largest usable runner at the max cc and be legal

Out of a 1.94/1.5 valve they are flowing right around 260/200 on a 4.060 fixture with no pipe on the exhaust. 162cc intake and 65cc exhaust

Mark (VortecPro) is a perfect example of what can be done with the heads when no rules apply,,, Bryce from Dr. J's also did one just like Mark's and their engines made comparable power without all the bull crap done to the heads

Why aren't guys working over the 269 cc Merlin ovals??

They have equalized ports, don't they..

What's wrong w/ the oval Merlins to keep guys from starting w/ them??

Exactly and better yet look for the first released issue of this head. It was a 290 cc intake port. I think this 290 cc port was released and casted around mid to late 80's. If you come across a set, look in the valve spring area for the dates. I assembled a LS-7 short block for a Friend and used this head. It was a Killer on the street, never went to the track. I wish I knew where those heads are Today.
