First, let me just say thanks to all who have replied to my continued questions on this forum. It's been a invaluable resource while working on my 68 Malibu. Now the question...whats up with this wire???

Don't know much about 68's but could it have been a trunk light wire at one time?

A factory light would have used a orange wire. Can you follow the wire and see what it goes to

Scott it is a trunk light like the posts above. Look at your rear harness on the drivers side towards the tail pan and see if that wire goes to a plug there. If so its factory.

Mine plugged in just below the rear window on the left side on my 70, orange wire just like yours.

I think there is supposed to be a clip that keeps the wire attached to the hinge.

It actually clips in with the tail light wires near the trunk latch.

Some are different, my 70 hardtop plugs in like I said below the rear window, my 69 convertible plugs into the tail light harness. The hardtop wire runs off the dome light, since a convertible doesn't have a dome light it has to use the tail light harness. 68s may differ.

Although not a Chevy my 68 GTO had the same setup. Used a pair of clips to attach it to the hinge.
