Just curious to how affective these jackets really are. I was told it could increase horse power due to the reduction of heat in the engine, do they even look nice?

I don't think it's due to heat reduction in the engine, it's due to heat retention in the headers...helps move the exhaust. They also help you get your hands in there to check/change plugs between rounds. For a street car, they may be overkill...a good coating will do wonders for heat dissipation and keeping the underhood temps down as well as add life to the headers.

Restore it or customize it, but drive it and enjoy it!

From what I heard, it can cause your headers to crack because it does not allow heat to disipate. It's only good for racing and not street cars. If you use it, it will void the warranty on the headers. You're better off having the headers ceramic coated inside and outside.

I would stay away from the "header wrap" stuff, I have had two cars that had the stuff, and when I removed it there was nothing left of the pipes! The rust and scale was so heavy that in some cases there were holes in the pipe after wirebrushing. It definately turned the headers to garbage.

If you're streeting it, go with a good coated header. The wrap is ok and really keeps the underhood temps down, but what drptop70ss says about them rusting is true. Most likely because of moisture. I rotted my collectors on a pair of $$ Pontiac Hooker Super Comps that way $$. It'll also get raggy looking in a year or 2 from the heat. The sleeves don't look like they fit tight like the tape does so they may not be as effective in "scavanging" exhaust gases. The whole thing behind it is to keep the exhaust temps up. When they cool in the exhaust system they (the gases) slow down the flow therefore decreasing performance. For every 10 degress you'll pick up 1/10th HP. Thats not much. Plus a set of properly coated headers will outlast 3 or 4 sets of uncoated headers so they're well worth the $$$.

AlMyPal39 and Dave are correct. If you want to lower your underhood temps, get a ceramic coated header or a heavily plated one like a Thorley (plating minimizes heat dissipation).
