Voltage Issue

Hi Guys, here is a puzzler.

When all my lights etc are on and the car is running - the lights flicker up and down.

1. Ran a volt meeter on the car - the needle is where it should be - then it jumps ahead - then goes back down to the proper voltage.

2. New battery
3. Replaced the regulator
4. Cleaned all the grounds
5. Alternator is working

any idea?

Do the lights flicker or go on and off, You did not say. When you raise the rpm to lets say to 1100 / 1500 do the lights stay steady?.
One of my 69's had an external voltage regulator and at an idle the lights slightly flicker. so did the other car untill I converted to an internal regulator. I believe that thats what an external regulator does and thats why we change them out. It is outdated technology.

Monitor the voltage at the output of the alternator to see if its varying there. Then check the voltage at the battery. How old are your battery cables, and what gauge (size) are they? Did you check the condition of the wires and connector at the voltage regulator? What brand of VR did you buy?
