Unplug and plug in your headlight sockets several times, could be corroision inside the plugs.

its not just the headlights only that flickers - its the ac, rear lights - everything

 

Go to our search, and type in flickering lights, lots of stuff to try.

It's usually caused by the voltage regulator.

Ok, i replaced the regulator 3 times - still same problem. regrounded the car - still same problem.

I ran a volt meter on the car when its running and there are still sporadic jumps in the volts

any ideas???

 

Do the lights flicker or go on and off, You did not say. When you raise the rpm to lets say to 1100 / 1500 do the lights stay steady?.
One of my 69's had an external voltage regulator and at an idle the lights slightly flicker. so did the other car untill I converted to an internal regulator. I believe that thats what an external regulator does and thats why we change them out. It is outdated technology.

do you still have the old points style of regulator? you may just need to buy a solid state type of regulator

 

no everything is new -

lights flicker at any rpm - and besides the lights - i can see there is a shift in the voltage using the volt meter weather the lights are on or not

 

Ground problem?

 

Monitor the voltage at the output of the alternator to see if its varying there. Then check the voltage at the battery. How old are your battery cables, and what gauge (size) are they? Did you check the condition of the wires and connector at the voltage regulator? What brand of VR did you buy?

 

My 94 Z71 was doing the same thing. My light switch was going bad. Replaced it, lights don't flicker anymore. Just might be worth a look.

sounds to me like your alternator is bouncing between 12 and 14 volts

 

I think Tino is on to something ! If you really want to keep the external regulator start trouble shooting at the source. Try to icolate the charging system and battery from the car.
