If you have to ask - you won't understand the answer. For one, I have had this car for 18 years this month. I got it cheap when I was 14, my first car, took my driver's license in it, etc etc, I used it for transportation for a long time, took it to university etc. I can't take a sawzall to the floor and tunnel - end of story. Maybe when I'm knocking on 7.50's I'll change my mind, but it would cost the same to build a completely new purpose-built car when that time comes. And it certainly wouldn't be a street car. Have you ever ridden in a tube chassis rattle trap on the street? Feels like a russian tractor not a street car.

I also demand the original backseat. There is NO possible way you can go 25.2 and keep it - you need bars there.

Remember - this is not an outlaw pro street car, it is a street car this time around and I intend to drive it with full, original interior, seats, dash, headliner, back seat, quarter windows that roll up and down, I'm planning on putting the steel trunk back on so the only fiberglass will be the hood.

It will make enough power to run as fast as I am comfortable in this body/chassis at full weight so why cut it?

If you are interested in the 25.5 spec - buy the prints. I think they are $50.

Basically, it's this simple. Where the hoop and the pillars of the cage join the original frame, you must box in the C-frame for 6" with 1/8" steel plate. You need to X the doors. You need inner frame rails under the floor from the ladderbar crossmember (or the crossmember you must add there if you run stock suspension) that go on either side of the driveshaft and then angle out to rejoin the original frame at the firewall.

You need a 1" roof diagonal from driver to pass front.

You require three bars 6A, 6B, 6C which can be 1 1/2" that go from the original frame where the pillars come down at the driver's foot, to the inner framerails (one on each side. The 6B is the new tranny crossmember which can be removeable which goes in between the inner framerails.

You can delete a lot of the floor bars (sill plates and diagonals under the driver and passenger) if you retain stock doorjambs, floor, and firewall.

You need a funny car cage. Too difficult to describe the variations of driver position - 3 variations. The rest of the bars are structural, but I hate the funnycar cage. Sad thing is that it will go sub 8.50's on 10psi so I must have it.

I have chromoly wheelie bars also but i haven't mounted them yet. I want to be able to take as much of this race car crap off when I drive it on the street...

SO do you understand why I don't want to cut it? This isn't any old car, I've had it for more than half my life and I'm on engine combination #10 and paintjob #4.

I agree. Sure you could build another purpose built car for new new engine but it wouldn't be the same. Can you give us some history on the combinations you had, how they ET ect... Love your turbo buildup. I have never did a forced inducted engine.

Undee, very few of them were raced on a track - I grew up in a small town which was a long ways from a track so I just test-and-tuned on the public roads. None of the small block combinations were stellar by today's standards except they held together, I learned a lot and had fun, and used a lot of nitrous. I never had a single nitrous mishap on my small blocks and I had at least a bottle a week habit in the summers for years!

Ryan, I hear you lound and clear on the SFI 25.5. I can stomach all the extra bars but the funny car cage requirement really chapped my butt. Definetly not street car friendly. My car (79 Camaro) has a current 7.50 sticker, but will only cert to 8.50 on next go around unless I upgrade to 25.5. My car is street too, so I'm not going to install the funny car cage. I've got a good 10 point chromoly cage that I feel comfortable with and around here their not too strict. It's mostly 1/8 mile racing so the speeds are not super high. BTW, the dude with the turbo Rambler lives in my town. The car is just plain sick. I think if he gets it all dialed in, and put it on race fuel, it'll go sub 8's.

Funny - I had looked at the ed quay wings and thought they were not as cheezy as most. I am not worried about the torque - I have very good help in the boost controller department... Harold, my car is pretty low now. Trying for an 8.5" ride height in the back and 7 to 7.5" in the front.
That firebird rides about 4-6 inches off the ground and has a big wing too boot. Definately not for the street. Its a 1984-92 body style with a streched nose, and looks like an ant eater but it runs good. It carries the left front wheel for quite some distance.

My main concern is your back window recess as this feature of the 66'-'67 Chevelles causes high speed lift over 160 MPH from what i have read.

Hey Ryan - I wonder if you could recommend any good meds for my wife so I could have a budget like that.

Please note - she still must be able to go to work and back me in and out of the water box.

Harold,

The guy helping me has stock front suspension nostalgia pro street cars going 1.09 60's and he told me where to put the front and rear ride heights. It will need a wing but he is not as concerned about the body style as you are. And ironically I believe he built the green 66 nostalgia car that you speak of. (Ferrari) So I am working with the right people!

MAT, the secret drug is hard to find, but I can get you some. It's called "rip up the receipts and don't bring them home, have packages delivered to various locations (ie not home)." LOL LOL LOL LOL And buy her a nice expensive family vacation somewhere. (in the process)

Wow!This looks like an amazing project! The only thing is, I have a hard time with a turbo THAT size not having any lag.I understand you have a lot of cubes, but there is also a lot of wheel there to spool. At any rate...it looks awsome!I can't wait to see it in action. The best part is...it's gonna' be on the street.Look out smokey! :)

Progress pics - soon. LOL

blown70, doubt it all ya want! The fellow who picked and supplied ALL the turbo and EFI parts and will help with the tuneup has made a few of these, and without going into details he has set a lot of records as crew chief.

I am a turbo virgin, but when someone who puts the SAME TURBO on HALF the cubic inch and runs 200+ mph says "it's going to spool so fast that a boost controller is necessary to launch the car" I tend to listen LOL.

;)

Hi Ryan, The guy here with the anteater looking Firebird just won the outlaw 10.5 portion of our last shootout race. He ran 7.25 @ 200 MPH in the finals so he's getting the thing down the track now. It carries the left front wheel for about 600 ft. There is also a 87-93 hatchback Mustang with a Turbo that also runs this class here. Both have 106 MM Turbos. The Mustang has run 7.20 @ 193 MPH at our track so its probably the quickest so far and has run 202 MPH at another track. There is a lot of power in those turbo powered monsters. Both of these cars have very little ground clearance.

ryan, glad your car is progressing , cant wait to see it run. my engine builder went 6.38@227 this summer on his 427 ci single turbo pro mod car.he says once you go turbo/efi you will never go back! by the way, his old "street car" went 6.66 last year on juice, this year it 481 ci,16 to1 all motor combo has went 7.32 @188. i know its not a pump gas, true street car like your but not bad for a small shop, out of his own pocket. (www.jensensenginetech.com) are you going to use a single or double anti-roll bar?

Very nice! I thought about doing the BBC turbo thing with my 80 Malibu but then I found my Chevelle so plans have changed. I did find the cool 66 Chevelle video from Texas. It's a 60mb or so download and 12 minutes of play time but a cool video

If your talking about Buddys Chevelle from Odessa Texas, here is a short video that will load quick. It is a pass at our new 1/8 mile track.
