I have a 1" gap between the bottom edge of the trunk lid (when closed) and the top of the rear panel on my 69 chevelle SS. As far as i can tell, i have adjusted the locking mechanisim correctly so that its shuts right.

In addition, the entire trunk lid seems to be sitting about 3/16" higher than it should be.

Does anyone know how to properly adjust the trunklid to get rid of these gaps? The trunklid is perfectly straight as well as the rear panel. There is also no shims between the panel and swing arms to raise the trunklid up. Does the spring mechanisim have something to do with this adjustment?

thanks in advance for your help.. this has been puzzeling me for some time now.

have a few questions for you.
1. When closed, is the gap at the front edge
correct and the same as the sides ?
2. Did you install new trunk gasket seal ?

3. the 3/16 . Is that at the rear and taper to level at the front?

If its level in the front and you put in new seal. adjust the lower catch down( need to slam the trunk harder) to conform the seal

Wayne,

the gaps at the front and sides are even all the way around the trunk perimeter. the height of the trucklid is approx 3/16" heigher all the way around the trunk also.

I did just install new weather stripping in the trunk area, but i don't think this is the problem.

I don't know if i can do it or not but i'm going to try to post some pics here to describe this better.

thanks...

The weather strip IS the problem, this I will bet.

Wayne,

could not figure out how to include pics in this message so i emailed you some photos to look at. take a look at them and tell me if you have any suggestions. i don't think it's the weather strip because my bodyman told me he noticed this gap when he was alignming up the trunklid without the weatherstrip....

I'm wondering if it's possible that i have the wrong trunklid on my car. Does anyone know if there are other GM cars that have a trunklid similar in dimensions to a 69 chevelle? is it possible that they may look the same but are a little different in dimensions. HELP. this thing is really bothering me. thanks...

I still haven't figured this thing out yet. the trunklid bottoms out at this position with the lock assembly totally off. it's not the new weather strip because i can easily push it down with my hand and the trunklid won't budge.

Anyone know what the 3 notches in the trunklid spring assembly are for? are they for setting different tensions in the srping assembly for the trunk lid. if so does this limit your travel in the down direction. looks like mine is set on the middle notch.
