I'm putting this in tech as I'm not sure exactly where to ask it.

Car has been at paint shop for probably 4 months. I stopped by and they are slowly but surely working on it, and they've cut in the door jambs, trunk, etc.

PROBLEM IS: surface rust appearing under hood on: new master cylinder, brake lines from MC, new bolts on exhaust manifold, new rag joint, new alternator spacer, etc. Basically anything I've put under hood "new" has surface rusted like a *&%$#* since going to his shop.

QUESTIONS: a.) How do I get surface rust off efficiently when I get the car back? b.) What can I do (if anything) to keep it from just coming right back.?

P.S. yes, I'm now beginning the push to just get the car finished so I can get it back to an evidently drier garage to put it back together.

Thanks,

Eastwood has a spray product (Oxysolv) that does a fair job. To be 'perfect' though, you need to catch it before it pits the metal. Then after its clean you can use a clear 'satin' polyurethane for protection.

It's common for those parts you mentioned to rust. regardless where it is. The bolts, master, alt. spacer. manifolds, are all parts with little or no paint. My cars are in a heated, dry garage and I have the same problem. The manifolds have to be coated with Jet-coat or aluminum to stop rust because they get so hot. I've tried different paints and they all fail sooner or later. The master can sweat and cause it to rust. I just put lots of cast iron paint on it. The bolts can be coated with some sort of oil to help stop the rust.
What I do is take each individual part and figure out how to keep it from rusting. Once you get it home, it may be easier to deal with the rust, but it is a problem that may not go away completely.

No one ever said it was gonna be easy being an anal Chevelle owner...
