REBUILD!!!!

I went by to pay tha MAN, for my headliner /windshield install. He was also going to "finish up" the steering column which I did not tear apart or finish due to the ease of getting around in the car without the steer wheel on and complete (tried to make it easy).

Tells me he took it apart and PARTS are missing. I looked at NPD and Year One, not one has a 65 rebuild kit.

Instructions and sources would be appreciated....I'll do this myself when I pick it up tomorrow.....but IT DOES look purdy!

Original Parts Group has a replacement brass bushing to replace the parts at the engine side of the column tube. That white plastic part is hard to find in good shape. OPG also has the turn signal mechanism, wiring harness, and cancelling cam. If you are missing parts to the column tube, such as the bowl, then you'll have to search for used parts. True Connections is a very good supplier for your 65 parts.

okay cool.....I have a donor but that car sit in rain and some water.....don't know if the parts are good or not. On my car, I did a bad thing and assumed the parts were there and now I don't know what parts are missing. So it's back to the books and tracking more parts:noway:

Mike ...true, it's a 65 with floor shift and non tilt. Upon my first inspection I assumed everything was there....ordered typical parts from Danchuk....and as usual "yeah this is all you need" was NOT there.

I don't have the car back yet, picking it up tomorrow, I'll get a diagram and tear it apart and see what is missing. Right now I have no idea, he mentioned the "cone" (apparently this is a common NON replaceable part).

There is a white plastic part that holds the bearing at the engine end of the steering column. That plastic piece is easily broken and not yet reproduced. Chevy High Performance mag. had an August 2006 article on rehab'ing a 65 Chevelle column. Same article appeared in Super Chevy. They found the white plastic part at Steering Column Pros, whoever they are. Good luck finding that plastic part. For the bearing, OPG makes a bronze or brass replacement for the ball bearing/race case.

I haven't been able to locate any good blowups of the 1964, 65, 66 Chevrolet standard (non-adjustable) steering columns. (Saginaw manufactured the tilt columns back then, Chevrolet designed and manufactured the standard columns.)

If you are not even sure what parts are missing, you might be better off boxing it up and sending all of the loose parts to someplace like Steering Columns Galore in New York. They are experts in rebuilding all types of steering columns. They do good work. They are not cheap!
