Hey Guys,

I encountered a problem tonight while upgrading from a column shift to a tilt floor shift steering column. The problem is when I slid on my underhood shaft(the one with the flexible rubber boot on one end) it would only go on about half way on the grooved shaft that sticks out from the firewall. I removed the under hood shaft and checked to make sure none of the grooves were messed up then tried again. I began tapping (lightly) the underhood shaft onto the new column and it has pushed the grooved shaft up into the new column. It's not entirely up into the column but it's up there enough that I cannot get the bolt and sleeve in it's correct place. It seems to be at least 1/4 inch shorter now.

My question is this, is there a technique to pull out the grooved shaft from the column so that I can get the sleeve (underhood shaft) back on correctly?

Thanks,

Bob

Actually I have answered my own question. The fix involved removing the steering wheel, removing the lock plate and lock ring. I then pushed the shaft out more and installed the intermediate shaft. Then I resinstalled the lock ring and plate. It was a pain in the butt but it is so worth having a tilt in a 38 year old car. :)
