OK, I'll bring this post back from obscurity as I'm having the same problem with my tilt steering. It's very stiff and I have to physically move the steering wheel up when the lever is pulled forward. Any ideas on how to fix this?

By the time that you get to the pivot pins, you might just as well keep going just a bit further and tighten the four screws that hold the tilt support to the cam lock plate. Those four screws loosening is a common problem with Saginaw tilt columns. The tilt support attaches the whole column head to the steering column jacket. If you have been reefing on the tilt head to get it to move up and down, then I wouldn't be surprised that the four screws have loosened.

These papers may be of value in disassembly and repair of your tilt column. You will find two attachments in most of these files. One is in pdf format, the other is Microsoft Word. Someday I will get rid of the Word versions.

This information is contained in the Disassembly & Repair paper #732 (above) but just to clarify your problem.

The pivot pins were manufactured with two distinct diameters. The larger diameter is supposed to be a press fit to the bearing housing. It should be impossible for you to insert the pin into the housing by hand. The smaller diameter should be a precision rotating fit to the support. This smaller diameter is the dimension that is causing your problems. I would pull the pin and clean off or just polish the smaller diameter on the pin. Gently tap it back into place.
