I just got my battery in car for 1st time since rebuild and something wierd is happening.

With the coil wire in coil and laying on the intake I can turn on the ignition switch, then turn off the ignition switch and a spark jumps (snaps)

Is it suppose to jump spark when the key is turned off?

is it a points ignition? if the points are closed it will charge the coil when you turn on the key, generate a spark when you turn it off. turning it off is no different than the points coming open. If it's an MSD or something there's something wrong with the wiring. HEIs shouldn't do that either.

It is a Mallory unilite distributor with MSD 6a box and Mallory coil.

Anytime current is applied then cut to a coil it will fire. See it all the time at work, even on brand new rigs.

Now the msd box.. not sure there.. Cause it's supposed to only apply current when its ready to trigger. As I understand it anyway.

This has really got me stumped also. I posted my question on the MSD tech web site so, we will see what they say.

I just tried to put the cap & wire on and start it .
It starts fine. I guess it is ok.

Now the starter is staying ingaged after starting. It will disegage when I just bump it over with the switch but if I hold the switch in long enough for the engine to start the starter stays engaged about 1/8 of an inch. Wierd.
It is a new mini starter. I wonder if my ignition switch might be hangin up????????????

more likely your starter is hanging up. Sometimes aftermarket stuff needs a little "adjusting." the teeth on the Bendix might bottoming out in the teeth on the flywheel. try a couple shims under the starter, see if things don't loosen up a little.
