I have a 70 Chevelle. I changed out the dash and guage cluster with idiot lights. I bought a harness for a 70 SS on ebay.

I am a pretty good mechanic but wiring just drives me nuts.

I have been reading some of the previous posts and have changed the ground wires to: Longest one to ebrake, second to dash frame and third to back of the speedometer. No help. I changed the printed circuit with one that wasn't broken. I made sure the light bulbs all worked. I made sure the headlight switch ground strap was hooked up right.

The speedometer lights work good and bright and will dim ok. The gen outer ring lights up and the light switch outer ring lights up. I don't have lights at the heater control, nor glove box. I don't have the cig. lighter hooked up as I don't allow anyone smoking in the car. (could that cause a problem? Not having that circuit hooked up.) I'm using AutoMeter temp, volts, and oil guages. I don't know how to hook up the gen so it will light when the key is turned on. Same on the temp and oil lights. All 3, temp, oil, gen should light up when the key is turned on, right? My turn signals work but the light on the guage cluster doesn't.

I remember reading one of the posts something about a 12 pin check but can't find the post now.

As you see, I have quite a problem and hope someone out there will be able to put me in the right direction. Gotta get this thing running, Rt 66 Rendeveous is just around the corner. Thanks

Jim

Lighter does not have to be hooked up, should not affect anything other than lighter. Oil and gen light with key on, temp when in start. Heater control on same circuit as gauge back lights. Glove box power same as dome light power (orange wire) does dome light work? Do you have a separate sensor for the temp gauge?

I can pull the green wire form the loom under the fender and make the temp light work.. How do I rig up the gen and oil since I'm using other guages to serve the purpose?

I'm more concerned about the rest of the lights in the guage cluster working. Again the onlything working now is the speedometer, gen outer ring andheadlamp switch outer ring.

I was reading one of your earlier posts about 72 ss guages not being compatible with 70 harness. I do have 70 guages because they are green and I don't know for sure what the harness came off of. The guages and harness are in excellent condition and were purchased on ebay from different people. The printed circuit on the original guage cluster was broken where the speaker bracket rubbed against it. I had another good one and replaced it but the lights in the other guages still didn't work. I hooked up a good ground from the e brake and turned the light sw. on. Grounded the metal back of each cluster that wasn't lit and nothing. The bulb was burned out on the dome light. Put a test light on it and it is hot with the door open. What next??
