Program Created by: Steve Strasemeier TIPS AND GENERAL INFORMATION
Every effort was made to seek out correct information but as more sources were researched more conflicting data was found. A decision had to be made based on experience as to which was correct. Many hours were spent at car shows and interviewing experts to attempt to present the most correct data.
Codes can be difficult to read due to years of dirt, grease, rust, paint, abuse, and worn out stamps. Take your time in cleaning the area as best you can and be aware that letters and numbers can easily be misread.
To determine weather or not a Chevelle is a true SS can be difficult starting in 1969 and up since the SS was no longer a separate model and does not appear in the VIN nor Cowl Tag. Please refer to the best Chevelle site in the world for information on how to identify an SS (http://www.chevelles.com/shop/index.shtml).
The following pages describe the function of each item in the menu or radio buttons you select from the home page in the order they appear on the home page.
Get in, sit down, and hang on. Here we gooooooooo!
To start, just click on one of the radial buttons to the left in the "Go To" section or select from the menu at the top, "View". If you select "AXLE" the following form will appear.
Information on the form will help you locate where the codes are stamped and how to interpret them. You can scroll through the entire list by using the scroll bar on the right hand side of the data window or you can look up a specific code. To enter a code to look up, click on the box "Click here to Enter Axle Code".
The following pop up will appear.
The text is already selected and you can start typing the code you wish to find. If you click on "OK" without typing, it will look up "CCW". If you click on cancel it will go back to the complete list. If you type in a code and it is not found, a message will appear "No Records Match". Click "OK" then Click on "Click here to Enter Axle Code". Try another code or click on "Cancel" to return to the complete list.
To exit the program click on "EXIT". To go to another page click on "HOME".
If you select "Cowl Tag 1" the following form will appear.
The cowl tag is a metal plate (usually painted over) riveted to the cowl area (between firewall and windshield) under the hood. The picture is representative of a typical 64-67 tag but I have seen many variations as to content and locations of codes and not all numbers are decoded (such as factory option and tracking #'s). To decode your tag, start from the top left, click on each bolded piece of data and overtype. Be sure to start with "Model Year" as all codes after that, depend on year. This form can be a little tricky, so if you are not getting good results, leave this form, come back to it and start over. To exit the program click on, "EXIT". To continue click on, "HOME".
Cowl Tag 2 is the same as Cowl Tag 1 except the picture represents a typical 68-72 tag.
If you select "Engine" the following form will appear.
This form will decode the Engine suffix for Chevelle's only. You can scroll through the entire list by clicking on the scroll bar to the right in the data window or select by engine size and or year. To look up a specific code click on the text box "Click Here" to the right of "Engine Suffix". The following pop up will appear.
Information on the pop up will help you find the suffix letters. The text is already selected and you can start typing the code you wish to find. If you click on "OK" without typing, it will look up "AA". If you click on cancel it will go back to the complete list. If you type in a code and it is not found, a message will appear "No Records Match". Click "OK" then Click on "Click Here". Try another code or click on "Cancel" to return to the complete list. Also to return to the complete list you can click on "Clear".
To exit the program click on "EXIT". To go to another page click on "HOME".
If you select "GAME" the following form will appear.
Information on the form tells you what the game will do and how to play. This is not highly accurate but can give you some idea of how to mash the load pedal just before the green and beat your opponent off the line. If you click on "LAUNCH" to soon a pop up will advise you that you lost. Click on "OK", "Reset" and then "Stage" to try again. Are you ready to test your skill against the tree?
If you select "INTERIOR" the following form will appear.

You can scroll through the entire list by using the scroll bar on the right hand side of the data window or you can look up a specific code. If you click on cancel it will go back to the complete list. If you type in a code and it is not found, a message will appear "No Records Match". Click "OK" then Click on "Click here to Decode Trim #". Try another code or click on "Cancel" to return to the complete list.
