What is the size of your technical Library? Include factory service manuals, How to books, Reference books.

Do not include monthly magazines,(hot rod, Car Craft).
Do not include Catalogs or Manufacturers Literature.

0 -10 Newbie - Tree Hugger. Probably can't remember where he left them.

11- 20 Likely Married W/Children. Probably has Dr Suess, Fun with Dick and Jane, mixed in with Hayes Manuals

21- 40 Serious Gearhead, Motor Manuals on shelf by year starting at 1955. Keeps 1/2' x 9/16" wrench in hip pocket.

41- more Hard Core Lifer. Keeps to himself, dreams of titanium, 5" Forgrd Pistons, Thinks the lobes on a solid roller cam are "Sexy". Dreams of an "oilless Engine". Likes his coffee to resemble 90 wt gear oil. Hold the sugar and cream.

Just the stuff related to the 69 and a few numbers books. Now, my profession, on the other hand, I'm drowning in books here

I found that if you can gather about five or six manuals on the same vehicle, collectively you MAY get enough information to repair it.

I usually figure, if I can get enough information to do just ONE repair successfully, that one repair will save enough cash and grief to justify the cost of many, many manuals.

Thus:
Estimate from Joe's Chop Shop to repair the little womans ride (needs computer) $550.00

Cost of Chiltons Manual $30.00
Cost of Haynes Manual $24.00
Cost of Motors Manual $29.00
Cost of used factory Manual $85.00

Money saved by DIY repair $360.00
Satisfaction of DIY repair PRICELESS
Found loose ground wire
Buy the best manuals you can find. Factory service manuals are usually the best, especially if you like to get in deep. Don't you just love the list of special tools at the end of the chapters.

Sometimes the most fun is completing a repair without all those special tools.

:hurray:

The Hard Cores are ahead ,but not by a whole lot. One gearhead e-mailed me to say that anything referring to Smokey Yunick should be counted as double.. I told him to shudup. Once you open a can of worms you will never get all of them back in the can.
My girlfriend came into the room about the same time and asked me if overlap was a dirty word. I told her no, but it does have to do with how well the intake manifold will SUCK. WHAT?

I bought the contents of a storage space used by a transmission shop and now am the proud owner of a whole library of transmission repair manuals, course notes, service bulletins, etc. I haven't counted them, but there's about half a pickup bed full.

That sounds like quite a find. Some of the automatics today are bullet proof. Did you find any good info on what fluids to use and when to change it?
Some experts are saying that you should change the trans and the differential fluid right after break-in.

I have a stand that I use to break in a rebuild before I install it. Run it on the stand, do the usual break-in for the flat tappets if that is what it has, or just run it for a while.

Pull the pan and you never know what you are going to find. I don't care how many times you boil it, wash it, or slice and dice it in a clean room, you will find sh*t inside after a short run. Thats why I like to plug the oil filter bypass at least on the initial run.

If it 's a good idea for the engine I guess It's a good idea for the trans and the differential.

Between 2 El Camino's ( a 1974 classic and a 1968 SS 396) a 68 Olds cutlass S holiday coupe, and my current toys, 1965 Impala and 70 chevelle I have easily 21 plus books on them. Not to mention Chiltons, haynes, etc. for various other daily driver cars and trucks i've owned over the years.

The printed information is worth it's weight in gold. And it doesn't need to be plugged in to work!

I inherited a literal truckload of manuals from a coworker who was moving back to ohio. He was a counterman for a now defunct restoration parts store and shop. He gave me about 30 antifreeze jug boxes and about a dozen totes full of catalogs, manuals, and reference materials. It took me 2 full weekends to sort them into what was going to be useful to me and what would be best used as income and useful to someone else. I offed a huge amount on ebay and at local swap meets, but kept a half-dozen Motors books for myslef and gave the ones that directly related to a couple buddie's cars those. I have a Mitchell and Hollander interchange book, some crash books from late '60s to early '70s, plus some more unusual stuff. I also nabbed as much reference materials as I could when my own shop was a GM Performance Parts and GM restoration Parts dealer. Add all this to the aftermarket parts catalogs and password protected websites I use for reference and I'm in the 40+ category by far. At work I have the whole GM service manual collection and the entire GM parts catalog at my fingertips.

Now, if only I had the time to use all of them.....

Note to self. Should any sort of manual be needed for said vehicle at any time. Contact Byran to consult his home library for specifications, nomenclature, or any said refrences that one may need.

:D;)

It would be really cool to learn how to read some of them. If all else fails read the instructions.
