Hey guys, I have a 1967 El Camino with a lightly modded 350 SBC, it has a new 700r4 trans and 4.10 posi rear. This is a street cruiser with an occasional romp, it will never see the track. I take it to about six car shows a year. I have a friend who owns a machine shop who will build a 427 sbc forged bottom, dart block and heads, 550 hp or a 505 bbc, forged bottom, dart heads and block with 620 hp. If I decide to go with the bbc, what would have to be done to the car to get the bbc to fit and work? This will be my daily driver, I drive about 4,000 miles per year...Any thoughts or comments?

I have a friend who owns a machine shop who will build a 427 sbc forged bottom,
is this supposed to be a 427bbc???

why don't you look into a 427 sbc, dart has shortblocks that are nice looking.
lots less things to change and will be plenty for you...

A 427 SBC with the right intake, heads and cam can be a very strong running engine in your car that can be dressed to look like a 283 if you want.

Easy install, present accessories could work and you could surprise a lot of people.

I have the DART small block 427 with AFR 220 heads AFR titan intake and it dynoed to 650hp, and after extensive research I went with an Extreme Automatics 2004r. Don't even waste your time with the 700r4, there is no comparison to the 2004r on any level. You will be very pleased with a properly built 2004r with your combination. I have the 3.42 rear gear with 3500 stall converter and its fun "down low" and cruises like a dream!

Since you already have the SBC why not stay SBC,
- no new parts to buy for the swap
- gas is not getting any cheaper
- stay with the way the engine is now
- why do you want all that more HP if you are not going to use it at the track ????
- I think your engine looks great the way it is

NOTEs
- just one thing if you have a downflow rad, which it looks like you have,
then I would lower/move the Trans Cooler Unit so that the heat from it is not keeping the top part of the rad hotter,
restricting airflow where the rad has the hottest fluid .

- 200R4 from Jake's Perf http://www.jakesperformance.com/200-4R.html
he is a TC member/sponser and is on here all the time helping members with their queries
and the 200R4 has a better overall gear ratios spread plus the 4th is .67 .

Pic of my engine, yours is much more pretty, hehe , I really like how yours looks compared to my BBC

Thanks for all the replies guys. At this point, I'm going with the 427 sbc. I will keep the hp around 500' I like this engine for the street able torque. Funny thing was it would have been cheaper to build the BBC. Here is a pic of a 427 sbc my friend built for a customer....

Thanks for the replies, I decided on the sbc 427, going with Dart block and Profiler heads, compression 10.5, going to keep the hp level to only 550. I had my 700r4 upgraded to handle 650 lbs of torque. Should be fun for cruising and hitting the car shows, a lumpy cam is a must for the car show folks... Will be finished in a couple of weeks. It will be a fun project to install the engine myself....:hurray:
