Application: 65 Chevelle 283 Powerglide - all stock

Question: Should I put any type of grease/oil/? on the seal or convertor before putting back the convertor? The pictures below are with the old seal.

I saw a couple of youtube videos that seem to go against each other. One guy saying not to put on grease and to only put a little bit of trans fluid on the seal. He said that grease doesn't allow the seal do its job and seat properly. the other guy put some type of grease on it for "start up", says it melts. I suspect it was a very special type of grease that the average person would not have.

Thoughts?

Theres a Transmission Assembly Lube. Its blue. You can use it to coat the parts lightly. Specifically the pump o-ring when reinstalling the pump. For seals just coat with trans fluid, same with the shaft that the seal mates with. With the assembly lube, a little goes a long way.

Ok,I didn't want to open a can of worms at first, but there did appear to be a very very little white lube around the seal and on the trans shaft when I pulled it. You can see it in the picture if you look closely. The lube was in good condition. I replaced that seal 30 years ago and I just don't remember what I did. In fact, the old seal was in very good condition, but, of course, you replace it.

For you others out there, I used a block of wood (2 x 4) to install the new seal. I liked how it completely covered the seal as you tap on it. You need to be careful not to just tap on the outside of the seal or you will bend it. I'll post some screen shots when I get a chance.

Hey all, I went with the assembly lube. For the price and the assurance, why not measure twice and cut once.

I'll post a video of the front seal install this weekend. I did the back seal with the 2 x 4 block of wood. Piece of cake.

Edit: I'll do this if I can get the maple tree removal complete LOL
