Pat's Run Training...

I posted a couple of months ago about starting to train for Pat's Run again ( Pat?s Run | Pat Tillman Foundation ). My training always has its ups and downs, due to IT band issues. My first run of the year I could only get to about 100 yards short of 1 mile before I had an issue (I had wrapped the right knee in anticipation that it would be like last year, but the left knee gave me the problem).

So, I started wrapping both knees before running. On my second run, I went 3.25 miles (I had to stop due to some muscle fatigue). Since that time, I have completed my full 4.2 mile course without issue). I have not felt particularly energetic this year, so my times have reflected that. Up until a couple of weeks ago, my best time was 47:51. On Saturday, I ran it in 46:54. Today, I did it in 46:30.

I did not feel like I was running my course faster, but I was. It is a good feeling to improve on my times. The race is about a month away. If I can keep improving, then I should be able to better my time from last year (44:01 - my first year I did the race in 45:18). I have not been completing my course this fast in training for the last two years, so this just feels good.

Mine don't pop - they just start hurting on the side of my knee after 2 to 3 miles, so I have to stop running. Once I stop running, the pain is gone. But, wrapping both knees has been working wonders this year - no issues at all since I started doing it.

Today's run had me finishing the first mile in 9:56. When I got to the 4 mile mark, I thought that I would beat my fastest time so far by a few seconds at best. Well, it turns out that I ran the route in 45:08, which is 42 seconds faster. My legs are feeling good and I do not have the tension in my lower back that I used to get while running. If I can improve a little more each run before the race, then I should be able to match or beat my time from last year.

Today's run was actually 9 seconds faster than my very first Pat's Run and I had IT band issues for about the last 1/2 mile in that race. This feels good and has me pretty stoked. Not bad for an out of shape asthmatic.

Today's run was a little rough. I didn't sleep well last night, so I was not rested. Then I got a bit of a late start, so the temperature was already pretty warm. However, I only ended up running the route 23 seconds slower, so that is not bad. Hopefully Tuesday's run will go a little better.

Well, my training has not been going so well. After I had the two or three great runs, I had no energy on the next two (I lost 18 seconds on the first one, and another 22 seconds on the second one). So, I decided to take a running day off, to let my body rest. When I ran on Tuesday, I had to stop at about the 1.5 mile point, as my left knee did not feel right internally (misalignment due to my neck being out). So, I got adjusted yesterday afternoon and went for a run this morning. I had to stop shy of 1.25 miles, as I discovered that I DID pull a muscle while working out yesterday (right hamstring). It isn't a bad pull, but enough that I could feel it and did not want to push it.

I truly hope that things are okay by Tuesday (my last running day before the race) and definitely by next Saturday (race day). It's just been one thing after another...

I got my race packet picked up today. The dang stadium is under construction again (just like my first year), so we won't get to finish on the field. But, that's okay. I pulled my right hamstring last Friday, so I will not run until the race, but I think things will be fine (the pull was minor and I haven't felt anything bad in the leg since Monday morning). I felt good after my regular workout on Monday and I felt even better during and after my regular workout today.
