I am picking up a new fender and hood for my '65 today. Before I put the fender on, whats the best thing to paint or coat the underside with? I would think it needs a little more protection that the primer that comes on it.

Thanks for the help, Jim

You are right, the coating that is on there will not last very long before rusting.
There is two ways to fix the problem.
(1) sand the coating with 400 grit paper or a Scottbrite pad, wipe it clean with a wax or grease remover, and spray the fender with a good quality can paint, semi-gloss or flat black.
(2) Same as above on the sanding and wipping step, now spray the fender with a base coat black paint and clear coat the paint, using a flattner in the clear.

It all depends on what what equipment you have available.

I used GM Reconditioning Black on the inside of the Fenders.

It will rust back there just as fast if not faster. You need protection, use epoxy. I suggest 240 to tooth up real good then the epoxy, 2 coats. If possible use a hand held sand blaster and black magnum for tooth. A little overkill but wort it if you want it to last. Then 400 and a medium black like eastwood chassis black or a flattened eggshell black in base clear. I would stay away from enamel. Single stage urethane 60-70% gloss works good.
