A few of these tasks are running because I'm on line right now. Nothing in the list seems to be a bad thing but something keeps eating up my CPU. I also think my computer is forgetting which tasks should take precidence over others if it's being over taxed.

Anyway, here's the list, is anything running I could do without?

kernel32.dll
msgsrv32.exe
mprexe.exe
mmtask.tsk
vsmon.exe
minilog.exe
mstask.exe
ddhelp.exe
explorer.exe
taskmon.exe
systray.exe
em_exec.exe
poproxy.exe
navapw32.exe
rambooster.exe
zonealarm.exe
msoffice.exe
wmiexe.exe
msimn.exe
tapisrv.exe
pstores.exe
rnaapp.exe
iexplore.exe
msinfo32.exe

I can close everything with no reduction in CPU. If I close explorer.exe Windows shuts down. (???)

Thanks in advance one more time.

I'm going to now go run that blackviper.com thing someone mentioned the other day.

I've done that Gene and CPU remains a 35-40%. Black Viper provided no help since his tips are for Win2000/XP/Me.

Maybe it's just time to upgrade to a decent modern machine and OS! :D

Just off the top of my head, these can be killed and never started. MMTASK and TASKMON are Windows Task Scheduler. If you don't have some Windows task scheduled like Backup or Defrag, delete them from the Startup.
MSTASK? Kill it too.

MSOFFICE.... no need at all to have it running. Delete it from Startup.

What's DDHELP? Kill it too.

Do a RUN \ MSCONFIG and then Startup, find each one and uncheck it. Look in your Start \ Programs \ Startup for any of these things and delete them. They won't start again when you reboot.
Just closing things (CTL\ALT\DEL - End Process)while Windows is running won't release their resources.

What o/s?
98 first edition was notorious for memory leaks. Second edition was a little better. Corrupt dll's can and will eat up processor time.

Make sure background scanning is turned off in your Antivirus.

How much Ram? How much free drive space?

If you are low on ram it will do a lot of swapping between the swapfile and ram. Causing a higher CPU utilization.

If you are running low on drive space the swapfile may not be able to grow and be unable to accomodate your needs. Can also cause a higher CPU utilization.(less likely)

How long have you had ramboost? Before the problem started? Make sure RB isn't on a constant refresh cycle.

Also you can download a freeware process display app that will show the individual CPU usage of each program.

Run a spyware cleaner. IE adaware.

I'm running Win98SE, I have a 20gig hard drive with about 5gig used. I have 340meg of RAM.

I've had RamBooster for quite some time without any problems. The CPU drain contiues even after it has been shut off.

Start it in the safe mode and see what kind of processer usage you have. I would also drop the ram back to 256meg. as win98 usually sees no big boost from more and sometimes runs worse.

 It's even using the processer when it's off? :D
