Or maybe he didnt get the titming back where it was prior to the intake change.

With that cam in a 350 i would run 18 base and 38 total if it will tollerate it on 93 fuel.

OK to answer a few questions.......

3.73 rear gear, 28.0 dia tire with 35lbs of pressure BFG radial t/a

18 initial timing. total is probably 36 or 38 I need to double check that. I was thinking of adding 2 more degrees of initial advance.

vac advance is hooked ABOVE the throttle blades (is that ported or unported?)

The heads have no porting work

I did not look at the plugs yet.

My et stayed the same, low 14's with that 2.3 60 ft time.
There wasn't much in the seat o' the pants meter. Low end seemed just as powerful to me.

I plan to do some timing changes and carb tuning. I guess I need to pull the plugs and get a look at them first. Should I be looking to jet it or start messing with the secondary vac spring first? Where should I start?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the comments/suggestions so far - Joe

Thats ported, should be hooked to fullintake vacuum all the time but that should no be affectine WOT perf, that wouldonly affect idle and very low engine speeds when just comming out of the idle circut before the vac adv is fully activated for its full additional timing benefit.

Are you spinning coming off the line or is it just a dog?

I disagree on the manifold vacuum for vac advance in all cases. If you mod the distributor for less mechanical advance and get the initial high enough (or better yet let's say advance at idle if the curve starts early enough), then there is limited to no benefit to running vac advance at idle. How high is high enough?? As much initial timing as your starter set up will handle. My HEI only has 12-14* mech advance now. So I run 22-24* initial. The curve starts early enough that I have a couple degrees more advance timing due to my higher idle speed, netting me 24-26* at idle.

Regarding gains from an intake swap. I am not surprised you did not show any gains. If anything, the gains would ne marginal, but barely measurable.

I have to disagree.
Well i should not say that , i should just say this .
I noticed a huge difference, 355 with edey performer cam. performer rpm intake , adapter with a Qjet ported ex manifolds 2.5" exaust with glass pacs...18 inital with 38 total all in by 2200rpm....no vacuum
say it was a bad boy .rolling from 15 and punch it it would go sideways for 150 feet....
Or if you let it hook by driving right it would suck you back pretty hard...

I tuned it , It was a friends 72 camino....Now he took off the RPM intake and replaced it with a performer....Saving the RPM for his TA..

He said it runs like a turd, I am bringing it over,,,,
I tried everything , 3 days of tweaking , then gave up, The thing must have lost 60 lbs of TQ.

He never put the rpm back on it though..

I think i would start with timing first, try it with vacuum hooked up and un hooked . Try all timing between 35-41 total without vacuum hooked..

I like all my timing to be in by cruise rpm....I ran 28.5" tires once and had 229 gears...Had all timing in by 1700rpm...got 18mpg when it was set up for 370 gears it was set at 2200rpm....And at 2200 rpm with 229Gears i got 8MPG

You just have to play so see what your car likes...

It spins like crazy. My launch technique is to slowly press on the gas pedal and hope it dosen't spin. Pretty sophisticated huh? Once I get the car moving I can nail it, when second gear comes, it spins again. I cant load the converter up by holding the brake, because the spinning gets pretty bad.

Good valve pocket work will make a very noticeable improvement. If you do it yourself, and follow the instructions in Dave Vizards head book, you will be surprised at the improvment. If that kind of work doesn't interest you, I suggest some CNC Iron Eagles.

Hooking should be your first interest. With the 700's first gear and 3.73's, gearing is a non issue. Get more rubber on the ground and do the suspension mods to make it stick.

I used to run 104 with a very tired 327 with stock heads, less manifold, less cam. I think if you get it to hook at a track, you will do the same.

I see you are getting all kinds of advice on making more hp. But more hp is the problem right now, with no real way to transfer that hp to the pavement in the form of traction. I would look into a good sticky street radial tire for the rear to start with. Take a few minutes and read this small poll. Then do some research on your own, before you decide. Hope this helps.
