Hi guys-

I have run across kind of an interesting M22, and I was wondering what kind of value something like this has. Details are:

P0431C - 1970, Oct 31, Muncie gear set (I think this is what the date code translates to)
3978766WO - This is the VIN tag. I'm not sure, but I think this indicates that the transmission was in a Chevelle.
3925660 - Case casting number
3978764 - Tail shaft casting number

The thing that makes it so interesting is that the transmission has never been used. It is still brand new. A tree fell on the car when it was in at the dealership and totalled the car. One of the mechanics at the dealership stole this transmission from the totalled car before the car was hauled away. It has sat ever since. It is in excellent condition, and doesn't appear to have ever seen the weather (I have some pics if that helps).

I was wondering if you guys could shoot me a ball park value on something like this.

3978776WO isn't the VIN ,it's the part number.
3978766WO M-22 1970-71 CHEVELLE LS6, 1971 CUTLASS W-30
Look on the vertical casting just before the mid plate for the part VIN.
The partial VIN will tell which division/assembly plant used it but you already know what it came from -right?

I have not heard of a 660 case being used in a Chevelle, as far as I know they were all 661 casting cases. I could be wrong, but it sounds like someone put that tag on another M22.

Mike, the original M22 ,with original tag, out of the '70 has that same 3978766WO tag. It is an LS5 car.

P0431C is probably P0A31C, January 31st, 1970.
P=Muncie
0=1970
A=January
31=31st day
C=M22

The Partial VIN will be stamped either on the side with the Pxxxxx number, or on the top of the main case.
69-70 was the transition years between the 660 and the 661 case. Please clarify all the numbers so I can add it to my database of cases for the switch.

Thanks,

I thought the 764 tail housings(32 spline) only came with the 661 case 71-74?
The 661 case ,and 764 tail housing, first came out in 1970. The SS 454 Chevelles/El Caminos got the fine spline set up, but the other models ,for the most part until late year, got the 584 tail housing with ten spline input gear and twenty seven spline main shaft.

To me, it looks like P0R31C, but it could be P0A31C. I've attached a pic.

Any help on my question of value associated with something like this?

Nice find..........I would look inside before laying down big money because so far you are only identifying what it should be. I believe Muncie cases will hold any of the Muncie gear sets (M20,21,22)........Maybe the gears were changed in the last 41 years.......

When talking about four speeds that they will. The M22 in the '70 has a 325 case that was bored to 1".

I have one that is fresh and will not part with it for less than the delivered cost of an Autogear M22W ;).

Just a tad over. But mine is FRESH. All new GM stuff inside and has had some cryogenic tratments. A used one but in great shape $1500+/-.

It's the other sequence that I wanted.
1 = chevrolet
0 = 1970
L = LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (VAN NUYS)
And they built:
Chevelle (1964, 1970-1972)
El Camino (1964, 1970-1972)
Camaro (1967-1972)
Monte Carlo (1970-1972)
I only listed the ones that fit the 70 date.

Hi Mike.
I thought Van Nuys did 70 Chevelles early in the year until production swung to Arlington?

Up until November ish that year????????

I see guys asking over $2k all the time for their OEM M22's. I have yet to see one bring that kind of money.
