Hey guys,

I need help here. I cannot figure out if I have the correct upper alternator bracket for my 66 chevelle. I am not running a 396 in it. I have a 454. I assume the mounting holes are the same for both engines. When I use the upper driver side bolt on the short water pump, the top bracket hole is off about 3/4" of a inch. Here is the link below for the bracket I bought off ebay. Will this bracket work on my 454? Also I am using a edelbrock torker intake manifold. Shouldnt all the upper alternator bolt locations be the same on all the manifolds?

That's the correct design bracket. Weather China made it to GM specs is another question. I would not asume your aftermarket intake has the same mounting points for the bracket as a GM one. If your 3/4 off I would shim it out if you can

I wish i could shim it. But its not 3/4" off that way. Its off from both holes. I dont know the correct hole center to center measurement. Just to make sure are there supposed to be shims or just use regular water pump bolt and use regular bolt to intake? I searched google images and cannot find a clear view pic because there is always something in the way.

Same experience here too except I picked up a used original racket. Also, the aftermarket manifolds that have the threaded boss for the upper bracket upper hole ARE in the correct spot. Not all manifolds have the boss though, just like the later GM manifolds no longer had it after they transitioned to long water pumps and mounted the alternator on the passenger side head.

Hahaha... i bet i will need to buy a new one to. When the bracket is installed does it fit tight against the intake and tight against the short water pump? Or are there spacers used on the bolts? Mine has a 4" gap between lower bracket hole amd swp. If you have a clear pic can you please post it?

The bracket i have is part number dii 1392

My buddy had the same issue with his 66. I think he broke out the cutoff wheel and welder to 're engineer his own bracket. Jim

At least i know im not going crazy. I will buy one from groud up and see if it fits. If not i can return it. I also found an original on ebay but its expensive $125. Can someone please let me know if these brackets will fit the same on a 454 as they do on a 396? I just want to make sure thats not my problem.

Yes, 454 and 396 fitment is the same. Most attachments have nothing to do with the block, but mate with the head, pump, & intake. I have a setup on a 454 using all factory brackets. And it does mate up with the Weiand intake that I have because it has the threaded boss for the upper bracket upper hole. Not all intakes have this provision.

I took a measurement across the 2 holes in my upper bracket off the car. It is a diagonal measurement center-to-center since the 2 holes are in different planes. The measurement is 5 inches. Refer to Keith's second picture. This will distinguish a BBC bracket from a SBC bracket. If your measurement is less than 5 inches I suspect that you have a small block bracket that is similar in appearance but the dimension is shorter. I can't comment on exactly how much shorter since I do not have one.

When I got my car it had this bracket.

I wanted the original style so I started by buying a summit then trans dapt and lastly a Specter bracket. They were cheap, but all exactly the same in how they DIDN'T fit.

Since the previous bracket was functional without the lower attach point and probably not all that necessary I figured I'd just cut off the lower corner of the Chinese bracket and make it "appear" like it was the way it should be. I cut the corner out of a washer and put the edge of the bracket in the opening. You'd have to look pretty close to see the bracket isn't how it should be.

If I could find a correct bracket I'd get one.
