I just put a 1050 Dominator List#8896 with 88's square jet, on my 496 with the adapter plate to go to the 4150 flange on my Strip Dominator intake with 781's. The carb was a gimme to try and it is performing very well for me so far and has been very streetable in my application.
What I would like to know is I am considering buying a used Dominator intake. I am looking at a 454-O part #2909 says rpm range 3000-7500 and a Weiand #7524 2500-7500. I was wondering if any of you had any experience with either of these or would prefer one over the other or something else. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

I was going to buy some AFR's from Mike but I am going to build a shop later this summer so the heads will have to wait, can't swing both this year. My combo is below. I drive mostly street and I have plenty of torque for now. I am using 28" M/T "I" treads for now. My 60' isn't very well at 2.29 but I am running 106+ at the 1/4 mile end. It is in my '65 C10. I can't afford a Chevelle but would if I could. Used to have '66 Chevelle in High School (77-80) with a Kenz & Leslie 454, that dude rocked!
Thanks for your time.
Jeff

Doesn't Holley still make a Dom. Strip Dom., oval port single plane intake???

I think I saw one once, the top hole in it was about the size of a toilet and that's what caught my eye b/c I looked twice at it to see what it was for..

He, He!!

It was ALL open plenum down inside..............

I wouldn't use a dominator on a combination like yours for sure. Too heavy, too mild, and mostly street use.

That said, I'd keep the intake you have with the funnel adapter. I doubt there is any measurable gain of difference with a different intake. Save your money and keep/run what you have.

If you must swap intakes, I'd use a Victor Jr with the same funnel adapter. A smaller plenum intake will help the engine buid torque to accellerate that heavy mass. Most all the dominator flange intakes will be too large in the plenum/runners to work properly.

I don't know about that, but the Weiand looks very similar to the Strip Dominator that I have. Runners and height are about the same.
Thanks for looking in Paul.
I will give you another shout when I go back to Illinois and maybe we can hook up for a lil' chat. :)

Thanks 10secBu, I was typing to Paul at the same time you were. :) I was wondering about the bigger runners on a Dominator intake as I have never seen one in person but was thinking the way you were. This is what I was needing to know is some real world experience. I don't really need to swap but just was wondering what the swap would be like. I like to play around with different setups as this is how I learned years ago when there was no interenet. I was the guinea pig around here as I didn't mind swapping things around. Older now and don't have as much time either. Thanks again and I will ponder on this.

I would try an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap or just the plane RPM, heavy car with a mild cam could probably use a dual plane intake.

I agree on the RPM Air Gap and the 950HP, but I have the Dominator for a $100 if I want it. I actually probably could run it as long as I want but don't feel right about doing that. It runs stronger than my 850 DP and I am already having traction problems getting out. I am going with larger 10" rims here shortly and some ET Streets. I am still going with the AFR's next year so I really don't want to spend a lot on intake and carb for the oval ports. Just want to play and try to get the most out of this for what I have or can get for little outlay. I appreciate the comments!
Thanks, Jeff

How about a little shot of nitrous.

Jeff,

I agree with Todd, Bob, and John. Keep the smaller 4150 intake or even go to an RPM Air Gap. Your combo is pretty mild to need the 4500 intake/Dominator.

Even with the AFR heads I think a 4150 intake and carb is more suited to your combo.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I appreciate it!

Don't think my Hypers will like the Nitrous. I am afraid that if I try it, it will be like beer, couldn't just have one. :)

I will just work with what I have and work on the 60'. This was the kind of advice I was looking for before going through with all the work etc. When I get the AFR's I do plan to use an RPM Air Gap and a 950 or 1000 HP. I will probably step up on the cam a little also as I understand the AFR's like lift, but no roller here too much $$. Maybe after I get my shop built I will have more business and more money but less time probably. :) Thanks again, it is greatly appreciated!!

I would look for an old Edelbrock C-400. Check E-bay.
It's a large runner dual plane that will help get all that weight moving.

There was a C-396..it was for an oval port 4150
There was the C-427..it was a rectangular port 4150
There was the C-400...rare....but it was an oval port 4500
Then there was the C-454...rectangular port 4500.

They all look like a GM dual plane with bigger runners. We ran back to back tests once on a high 9/low 10 sec race Camaro against a Team G single plane. No difference in ET or MPH.

But that was on a light, high compression race car set up for serious use. With you extra weight I'd take the dual plane and know it won't kill the top end either.
