Well Ive been trying to figure out the best and safest way to add a kill switch to the old '72 Chevelle. While reading up on kill switches I read that some people have used the cigarette lighter as a kill, only issue I had with that is that I really don't like the idea of Switching Hot thru the lighter so I came up with a circuit that uses 2 relays and switches Common instead of HOT for safety purposes (wouldn't want the lighter to short 12V to Ground). For this to work I need a solid 12V source that remains ON even while Cranking, I tried the Purple from the Ignition, and stereo turn ON lead but they momentarilly lose 12V while cranking...Any ideas on which wire to tap into would be appreciated.... Any way here is the schematic...

BTW... I wired it up and works :hurray: although starting is a little bit rough since I still cant find a solid source while cranking.......

Running HEI, I'll look closer at the wires coming from the ignition switch, I think its like nine wires coming from the ignition to a harness under the steering column, the problem I have is when I'm cranking I temporarily lose the 12Volts and the distro power circuit opens, but as soon as I let go of the keyswitch. (from crank to ON), I get my 12Volts back and the car stutters but turns on. So the bottom line is I Need Constant 12 volts when key is in the ON position, while cranking And while car is running...

Wouldn't the easiest way be to run the power wire to your HEI thru the lighter socket so the distributor only has power when the lighter is pushed in.
Find the wire that powers your coil and splice it thru the lighter socket.

The problem is that the lighter socket is grounded, hence it would heat the lighter element up or blow a fuse. If you use the lighter element to ground a relay coil there isn't enough current to heat the element.

My H.E.I. has full 12 Vts. as soon as the key is turned on, Or 12 vts on crank and run. Also a inline toggle switch to kill the 12 vts to the H.E.I.
Very simple and very effective. I use the toggle a lot, With the key in the run positition, NO power to the HEI, I can play with other items that need power to be tested or worked on.
With a toggle switch, No need for 12 Vts to power up or power down the Ign. With relays, You would still need a " Switch " to " Trigger " the relays.
Hey! Whatever works.

You are making it more complicated than necessary. There is no need for one relay to operate another relay when one relay will do the job. Actually no relay is needed but there are always different ways to achieve the same results.

Using the cigarette lighter to ground out the ignition system is such an old trick now that has been posted on the net and in magazines so many times, most thieves probably know to pull the lighter out first thing.

I'm not sure what the purpose of the first relay is. When you flip the switch, it looks like your first relay is doing nothing more than connecting gnd to gnd.

Omar when your car was new it had 2 wires on the + terminal of the coil. One from the ignition switch and one from the starter. The wire from the ignition switch is a resistor wire and lowered the voltage to the coil while the engine was running and there may or may not have been voltage during crank, but I think there was not. The wire from the starter solenoid provided full battery voltage during cranking. By using these 2 circuits to power your HEI it will receive power during crank and start. In lieu of that you will need to find another wire with full battery voltage during crank that comes from the ignition switch and there may not be one. BTW if you have not changed the original wire to the coil your HEI is not getting enough voltage to run properly.

Is the socket itself insulated from ground? Generally speaking, all the ones I've seen are metal and fit into a hole in the metal and by default are grounded.

Just more stuff to go wrong. When one of the relays fail you have a no start/run condition.
When I had my 64 Malibu SS I let Mary drive it...once. We were moving 2 cars and I was driving the 68 Camaro. We stopped at a store and went inside to pick up some bread and milk. We got back to the cars and she could not find the keys....they were still in the ignition with doors unlocked  Since then I never have worried too much about my cars being stolen.
The biggest worry should be a car jacking, it is already running at that point...will that thought keep you up at night

Well philip there's ALWAYS something that can go wrong with ANY switch or Relay in a car and just because NOTHING is absolutely Failsafe Doesn't mean you have to hand over the keys or leave em in the ignition for some would be thief that wants your car..
Being carjacked doesn't worry me, let's just say its not likely they'll get too far
About the only thing that keeps me up at night these days is paying for the kids college.....have you seen tuition these days......
Anyhow I got the kill switch working!!!!!, crimped all the wiring and taped it up nice and neat....if anyone wants me to I'll post the new schematic....thanks everyone for the replies...

Funny story, when working in a small body shop in the 70's a car came in for a paint job but didn't go out, yes after the car was all painted and put back together the car never started. My boss spent hours trying to figure out why it wouldn't run. We pushed it out of the spray booth and after a day or two I recall my boss being under under the dash then all of a sudden he started swearing big time. you see the owner of the car had rigged a kill switch to the ashtray. If the ashtray was out the car would run but if it was pushed in it wouldn't start. You see the dumb kid who drove the car into the spraybooth didn't smoke or like the smell of cigarettes so when he drove the car in the spraybooth he shut the car off and just happen to close the ashtray. Oh by the way that dumb kid grew up a Chevy fan and today owns a Chevelle and is a member here .
