McDonalds Filet-O-Fish - Less Cheese???

Stopped at McDonalds the other day and got my wife her favorite sandwich sold there, the Filet-O-Fish. For reasons unknown, before she started eating it, she took the top of the bun off and found that it had what appeared to be only one-half of a standard cheese slice. She has eaten these sandwiches on occasion for as long as I've known her (about 40 years now) and, although she doesn't usually make a habit of inspecting her fast food, swears they used to have a full slice of cheese. She wrote to McDonalds Customer Service, and part of their reply is as follows:

"You may be interested to know extensive customer research and testing was done to determine the way our customers prefer to have their cheese on the Filet-O-Fish sandwich. Interestingly enough, most of our customers preferred to have a one-half slice of cheese on their sandwiches. In fact, the Filet-O-Fish sandwich has contained one-half slice of cheese since we introduced the sandwich in 1963."

My wife insists that's BS. I find it hard to believe that in 1963, in the days of who-cares-about-nutrition, they put half a slice of cheese on a sandwich. Anyone else have any comments on this?

Mickeys must have lost their processed chesse connection some time back. First they had a double cheese for a buck then it became a McDouble for a buck and extra $$$$ for the double cheese burger. Now they are skimping on the cheese on all their gutbomb cholesterol doses. They also stopped carrying the 2fer a buck cherry pie's and now charge extra for that. In an economy where there has been no inflation everyone is sure raising their prices but it isn't factored in as a cost increase.

It has always been a half slice!

Best fish sandwich id from BK! The best way to order it is to request it fresh. The will drop one right then while you wait and it IS worth the wait!
Better than one that has been in the steam table for 10 minutes that they take out and nuke before you get it!;)
BK Big Fish, lettuce only and then slather that ocean toad with Zesty Sauce for the Onion rings...yummy! Although they can over cook this, too....

you know i always thought it was a full slice of cheese,
but last one i had only had the 1/2 slice of cheese.
tasty sandwich, the tartar sauce is always too much though.
i always have to scrape about 3/4's off so i can taste the fish.
hoki??? who knew.. :)

I can count on one hand the number of McD's fish sandwiches I've had but I think it was only a half slice for some reason.

Also, I worked with a guy that used to be a commercial fisherman. He told me the sandwich was from the tail of a monk fish?

I don't know what a monk fish is, and Doug was always good for a "story" so who knows? :D

I don't really care what kind of fish it is as long as it tastes good.
I'm not a fish eater anyway and will not eat ANY fish with bones, unlike my wife who loves any kind of fish.
(cookies, brownies or cake with nuts is like eating fish with bones too)
Actually I would just as soon not have cheese on any sandwich unless it's pepper-jack.

I've always wondered why they put enough tarter sauce for 20 sandwiches on one sandwich, I have to remember "light on the tarter sauce".

I've been eating those things for 35 years (except for a period when they went to a different fish about ten years ago - it was terrible) and for as long as I can remember, it's been 1/2 slice of cheese. The reason I know is that I remove most of the tartar sauce so I always look and I've always noted that.

Man, I hope it's not true that we are what we eat!

Wow, its been years since I've been in a McDonalds. Hadn't even thought about it until I saw this thread. Obviously I dont miss their brand of garbage from my life, so I still wont eat there.

As I said it has always been a half slice but has anyone noticed when buying other than buying the mushy individual slice process cheese food that the size of the slice has decreased buy about 25% while the price went up?
We but the Kraft or Dutch Farms deli slice american cheese. In the last two years it just kept shrinking in size!

Don't care how ugly the fish is as long and it has a good taste!
We even used to eat carp! My great grandma used to pickle it! She could also fry it up and you would never find a bone.
Never could figure out how she pulled that one off!:)

From the most reliable source on earth, Wikipedia:

"The Filet-O-Fish contains a battered fish patty made mostly from Alaskan pollock and/or hoki, half a slice of processed cheese and 30g (1 oz.) of tartar sauce (made with dill relish and seasoning) on a steamed bun. It is similar to an English favorite, the fish finger sandwich."

and:

"McDonald's originally used cod, before declining cod catches forced McDonald's to find sustainable fish elsewhere. McDonald's is trying to maintain fish only from areas certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council, but that is becoming more difficult each year. Hoki is still a major ingredient."

Burger King, (until this past week) home of the creepy looking 'King'???? If their food was free, you wouldn't catch me eating there, just because they had that effed-up looking pervert/weirdo in their commercials.

Thanks to those who responded with knowledge of the half slice.....guess it must be another one of those things that your mind perceives differently than the reality
