if you do a search you can find out some ppl have put the LT1 into there velle. i was going to do it but i relized it is my 1st car and that i should keep it all muscle cary.

here are some sites that have LT1 parts and manuals, but nothing really where you can find how to put it into a velle...

helmic manual

how to rebuild an LT1

speartech.. where you can send your harness to get it to match up w/ the one present in the car

an LT Nova

here is a link to the post that you had made on what it would take to install the LT into the velle

and a 68 camaro w/ an LT1 in it

well i hope those helped.

Whatcha wanna know? I couldn't have done it without the factory service manuals. Mechanically its pretty straight foward. If you give me some time, I'll send you a list and pinout of all the wires you'll need. I had mine in my chevelle for almost 5 years no problems and just recently dropped into my elcamino.

steve, what year and model is your motor? can i use the headers that are on my stock 350 now in my chevelle?
this is a big project to bite off when i already have so much else going on. i really want to plan it all thru well before i get tearing things apart. i nned the trans still, how do i do the floor shifter? i guess i will loose my factory horseshoe shifter? i would love to not have to change my exhaust. i would pay for a step by step instuction booklet. i will probably write my own if it all works. call it "LT1 conversion for idiots!" i will be doing lots of reading i see.

Pete if you go with a 4L60(E) then you can just check with Grounds Up or directly with Shiftworks and order the conversion kit to use the OD transmission. It uses the stock cable and shifter mechanism but has a new detent plate, indicator, cable bracket and cable lever for the trans. Great kit and has worked flawlessly in moms car for many years.

Both the engine and the transmission are from a 95. I was told it was from an impala ss, but I think it was really from a caprice. A friend of mine actually started the project and I bought it from him when he was "finished" with it as he had lost interest. He made a bunch of money in the Internet craze and bought a new porche to play with

. Anyway he lived down the street from the guys at www.jagsthatrun.com and got a lot of help from them. I thought someone said there was a chevelle in the newest version of this Swap Guide, if so then its probably mine. Since then I've gone through and cleaned up the wirirng alot and fixed alot of little gremlins (due to taking shortcuts) he was having.

Well... yes and no. I had the a/c hooked up and working in the chevelle. I had bought some headers and went to install them but found that the lines coming out of the back of the compressor went straight into the #2 exhaust tube down by the frame. I didn't feel like spending the money on having new ends crimped on and maybe they might not still fit. At the time the a/c was more important to me than having headers.
Now my elcamino doesn't have a/c so I put headers on it.
Short answer is yes unless you want a/c. I've got the headpipes if you stay with the manifolds. Also I've heard that the stock manifolds tend to crack.

There's nothing special about the shifter either. Its just like the 700r4 except the computer helps adjust the shift points and converter lockup. As suggested the Shiftworks conversion should work mint with your floorshifter.
These should be your friend :D :D :D :

Steve, which manuals did you get? Did you find that they were good or still lacking? I've looked at Helm. Is that their shop manual set?

Have you tried any tuning? I have to decide if I should find a 95 computer or use the 96 OBDII computer. As far as I know, the OBDII is only tunable (besides having someone do it for me) by using the LT1 EDIT program so that may limit the tuning capabilities.

I've got the motor but no electronics at all so it's going to be interesting. Basically, the top of the motor got scorched in a fire under the hood. I'm also restoring the car so I've got a few years to get everything together. That's unless I get impatent and stick the motor in the Impala to try it out.

The elky picture looks like there's an aluminum head under the valve cover. Is it?

In either the August or September issue of Super Chevy they had an article about dropping a LS6 in a 70 Chevelle. They refered to a book you can buy from your favorite GM dealer . . . ah! Found it, "LS1 Engine Kit Installation Guide" GM P/N 88959384 (see the Sept issue). I haven't seen the book so I have nothing to offer relative to how useful it is.

Peter,
I'm pretty sure these are the official manuals that GM puts out. Says GM Service Technology Group all over them. They have troubleshooting flowcharts up the kazoo for everything. All kinds of driveability troubleshooting. Extremely detailed wiring schematics. They were kind of pricey though, but very highly recommended.

Haven't done any computer tuning. Before I knew about LT1edit, I did get a hypertech programmer to change for tire sizes and shift points. General consensus now is that they are pretty much good for only that anyway. I also bought one of these scan tool Its kind of cool, you can log all sorts of data and helped me troubleshoot alot of the little gremlins. Works on any OBDI gm vehicle.
From what I understand, you pretty much want to stick with the OBDI system. Easier to work with and requires less sensors.

Heads are the stock iron heads. I've done absolutely zero internal mods to the engine. It dynoed at 252hp and 315ft/lbs to the wheels through the manifolds, msd stuff, and the "cold air intake". Plenty strong for me.

I've got an ECU from a 94 CHP caprice that works if you are interested.

Thanks Steve. You've got mail.

Now, I've got to start looking for someone trying to sell those manuals even though I have doupts I'll find them used unless the person has given up on the car.

I'd agree about the Hypertech. They are a lot of money for what you can tune with them. I've always have a feeling that they have an agreement with GM about sharing the computer info if they don't create anything that can affect the emissions.

I didn't make it real clear but the engine is going in a 68 Beaumont. It's not going back in the Camaro it's coming out of.

I'd bet the book dalic mentions was made because of the ASA racings series that uses the LS1 engine.
