i have a 69 ss big block 4 spd. when i turn the key to the crank position it will start but as soon as i release the key everything goes dead

Everything goes dead or just the engine dies. If just the engine then what kind of ignition, original points? If everything dies, dash lights, etc. it sounds like it might be ignition switch.

If the engine just dies make sure you dont have both small wires on the same side of the starter. I have seen that problem many times.

I'm assuming you have a standard points ignition system. Try running a test jumper wire from battery (+) to coil (+). Does the car continue to run after starting it? Don't leave that wire on there for a long time with the car not running.
If the car continues to run, you probably don't have voltage out of the resistor wire. Could be a blown IGN fuse.
