The other day it was time to renew the tag on one of the cars. So, when I went in to the local tag agency for my renewal, I had money, insurance verification and the renewal notice (as required for renewal in Okla) in hand. The agent behind the counter did his thing (as usual) with the computer. But this time I noticed him doing something different. In the past, the agent just took the insurance verification, put everything into the computer and gave me my new sticker for the tag. THIS TIME, the FIRST thing he did was plug in the insurance information into the computer (the local tag agencies' computers are tied directly to the state DMV). So, BEFORE ANYTHING happens, the agents can now verify that you do in fact have valid insurance in effect on the car before proceeding any further.
Yes, insurance is becoming more expensive, BUT, once I pull out of my driveway, I want all of those other idiots to also have insurance.
NO INSURANCE, NOT TAG RENEWAL! SIMPLE! And that's how it should be!

If someone does not have insurance on their car (AT LEAST liability), there is a reason. And there is a high probablility that the reason is because they cannot get insurance as a result of their poor, bad, careless or reckless driving history. I DO NOT want those idiots out there on the public roads with my family, you or me!!!!

They used to at least look at insurance documents when they annually inspected and emissions tested cars in my state, but not any more! I don't know what happened, that's the most important thing!

They stopped checking for insurance here... apparently, it wasn't fair to those poor illegal immigrants who can't get insurance to keep them from getting plates and driving without it.

It is the same here in AZ. I did not have to show any paper, as the insurance info is sent to the state via computer. I agree that this may help in some cases, but there is the possibility of someone cancelling the insurance after getting new tags. I am not sure if the insurers notify the state when coverage is dropped.

I got rear-ended in my Chevelle a few years ago by a group of hispanics in a box truck. They produced an insurance card from their employer. The policeman who wrote the accident up advised me to contact the employer, saying "he might rather write you a check than deal with insurance." Long story short, the insurance was expired, and I think the cop knew it but didn't feel like hauling the illegals to jail. My insurance wound up paying, and I ate the $500 deductible. The "employer" disappeared.

In GA, insurance companies are required to report auto coverage (or a lapse of) to the state. Most companies will do this within 24 hours of any auto policy change being made by you. I know Hagerty's does this very quickly.
Proof of insurance hasn't been required to be shown at tag renewal time for the past few years here in GA. If coverage is shown valid in the DMV's computer, you're good to go. If not, you are required to call your agent and have them submit proof of a valid policy before a tag renewal can be processed.

I think here in CA they'd get better results if they controlled it on the driver's license side rather than insurance. I'd bet if they started giving a real driving test we'd get 1/3 the people off the roads. I didn't even have to get on the freeway on my last test. Make some of those soccer moms in their big-ass SUVs have to back up and parallel park. Get that old codger in his rolling McMansion to navigate city streets.

Some people in Kansas buy liability insurance for one month, show the proof to the DMV as required to be able to get a tag then let the insurance expire until next year. :(

We don't have any kind of inspections here except for an out of state vehicle being brought in and then it's only a VIN check.

I personally don't think it would be fair to require insurance just to get a driver's license because many people drive vehicles they don't own and are insured by the vehicle owner.

This is next b/c they will integrate it into their cruisers and then radio it over to their main frame to catch you instantaneous while cruising!

http://www.licenseplaterecognition.com/

I want to say that it can scan a plate a second while driving 120 mph! Have to re-read the link?

One thing about it!

And that's NOW, if you have valid drivers license, then you can mount a 49 cc gas engine on a stout framed mountain bike for like $300 and drive it w/ no plates or insurance!

But if we ALL start doing this, they will change the LAW and require us to PAY so that they can feed the BEAST!!!!!!!!

In CA, the insurance info is electronically transferred to DMV. In the case you cancel the insurance, DMV sends you a notice telling you that you can no longer drive your vehicle or submit an Affidavit of Non-Use. I've submitted this form twice (when I removed liability from a vehicle I decided to park in the garage long-term, and when I was in the process of moving the Chevelle to Grundy). It's a joke really. As long as your tags are current, you can drive the vehicle. Now, if you're in an accident or pulled over, you have yourself some problems. Well, except if you're an illegal, then you get to walk and can't be sued because the illegal escapes to Mexico only to come back to CA under another name. It's a screwed up system!!

I agree. And insurance should be required to be paid for a full year in advance so none of this getting it for one month or so then cancelling. Also immediate notification to the state and broadcast to all police agencies if the ins co cancells it. Driver's license revocation and jail time if caught driving without it. No liability insurance, no legal driving. The states should do everything in their power to ensure that.

i like the way it's done here in MN.. no proof of insurance for tabs, no inspections, no emissions testing. just pay your money and you are good to go.
but insurance is mandatory for any car that is on the road- and i don't like that. it used to be that insurance wasn't mandatory, and coverage was cheaper. as soon as they made it mandatory- with promises that rates will stay the same or get cheaper- the rates shot up. which probably led to more people without insurance. i know i've had to make a choice between insurance and having a roof over my head and food in my stomach. and i did get a few no insurance tickets. hell, i even got a no insurance ticket that cost me a $500 fine and a weekend in jail in a car that i was paying to have insurance on and even had paperwork for. but, hey, when in doubt, the law will believe a Progressive national insurance company over a dirtball in a 30 year old car...

Here they posted signs a few years ago stating you have to show proof of insurance in order to renew your tags. The first time I had to go back out to the car to get the ins. card. Now they don't even ask for it and if you offer it up they refuse to look at it even though the signs are still up!
Yea, people here will go in and get the cheapest insurance they can then let it lapse so they will have a 6 month card to show if pulled over.
Some of these small companies will even give them a back dated card to take in after they lie to the police about leaving the card at home. The agent just makes them pay for a full 6 months up front to help them get off the hook on the no-insurance ticket!

I renew by mail and I do not know if they check before sending out the new registration. I do know the insurance companies have to report if you do have insurance because even if you do not have your certificate with you when stopped they can look it up in the computer.

Around here, the insurance is verified during the annual safety check. No safety check, no registration. But it's a failed system. Easiest way to get more money for an old car is to sell it right after renewing both the safety and registration, as they can drive it "legal" for almost a year before having to try to manipulate the system. FWIW, I usually sell my old vehicles in need of a safety check real soon, as I don't support the uninsured. :noway:
