I will be installing my engine back in the car hopefully next week.
It is a 396 with a TH400 and A/C. I am instlling it assembled, heads etc and trans.

My question is should I install the exhaust manifolds on the engine before I drop it in or put them one when the motor is in the car.
Years back I always reinsatlled the motor but put headers in which I used lay in the compartment to bolt up after wards, never worked with exhaust manifolds.

Also what other suggestions do you have for me before I do this. I haven't done this in 16 years, I am little out of touch

and believe it or not pretty nrevous. Feels like I am doing it for the first time again.

I am even more nervous for the start up - but that will be another adventure.

I just dropped the 396 back into my70 SS a short wile back. I noticed that the steering shaft makes it impossible to drop the engine in with the drivers side exhaust manifold on the engine. Also, the steering shaft makes it difficult to put the manifold on after the engine is in place. I would advise to lay the manifold in place before dropping the engine in or to remove the steering shaft.

Rich,by the way, your car is NICE!!!saw the photos.Anyway,I detailed my engine compartment a few years back, and when the motor went back in with the manifolds on-no problem.I used an engine tilter, helped out ALOT.If I had scanner,I post some pics.

I always dropped my engine in with the manifolds and the fuel pump off. Made it a lot easier to install the long engine mount bolts, you can install them without crawling under the car.

Thanks Mr 4speed,

I will be using a tilter as well - was your trans attached as well?

Rich,I only had the bellhousing attached.Went in fairly easy.I'm not sure what problem Kevin Barry had,but I do know the tilter was a life saver. My motor cleared the steering shaft fine.
