I'm working on the 64 ss car I picked up a few months back. Its a goldwood yellow 327/4 spd car, but the motor and trans were long gone when I picked it up. Its got the hump and hole in the floor for the 4 speed, but I'm in the process of switching it out for a built powerglide as I plan to part time bracket race this car when I'm not racing my 69. My question is, what did the tunnel look like on factory auto cars with the shifter on the floor? I cant seem to find a picture anywhere. I dont want to hack anything together, would rather do it correctly. I appreciate any help or pictures you can share. Thank you

Just my thoughts on this ;

Remove the the special 4 Speed Floor Hump
Are you going to a Cable Hookup or the original type hookup ??

My 67 came from the factory with a Powerglide
which uses Rods & Levers like a 4 Speed
so there was a good size hole in the Floor/Tunnel for it

The guy that put in a rebuilt TH400 went to a Cable hookup, which I hate as after time
every so often it has to be adjusted to make sure the selection of whatever Gear is fully engageing,

He patched up the large hole and made a smaller different one for the Cable,
unfortunately he did not take any pics of before or after
so cannot help you there right now

Thank you for the info. I'd like to use the original type shifter and linkage setup. I have a picture of how all that works thanks to the assembly manual I picked up yesterday, but unfortunately, you cant see the hole in the floor. If I can't find a picture of one, I guess I'll just have to get the shifter and mock everything up to see how it fits in the factory hole.

That sounds like the best plan to me.

After the Engine & Trans is installed
then you can see if the 4 Speed floor hole is big enough
for the Powerglide Levers/rods that are connected to the Trans
then connect to the Shifter Assembly
which should provide you with where the Shifter Assembly should be placed on the floor

Here is a pic of the Powerglide Shifter Assembly that would have been in my car from the factory ;

If you do not have the original Levers/rods then this place is one option for that;
see about 1/2 way down the page for the Rod Linkage ones ;

The tunnel / hump for a floor-shift powerglide is exactly the same as a column shift car, except for cutting the round hole for the linkage to go through. Here's a full replacement floor so you can see what it looks like:

Floor Pans | AMD 400-3464

I don't know if anyone makes a tunnel repair panel for a column shift car, which is what you would need. If no one makes it, then you might be able to get a hump cheap from a donor car with PG floor shift or column shift that has bad lower floor pans but a good hump.

Once you get a panel in it, then just remove the linkage arm from your shifter and put the shifter on the floor, and it will be easy to see how it is supposed to fit. Then you can mark the 4 bolt holes at the front, and cut a round hole centered between those 4 marks, for the linkage arm to pass through.

Good luck!
