Installing the modem:

You'll need to have your DSL or broadband provider assign an IP address, and maybe put a driver/software on the machine that you use to set up the network.

You can "rent" your modem from the cable company or go buy one for around $50 at places like best buy, which is MUCH cheaper than using the provider.

54 Mbps is pretty good, and if your desktop was defragged and maybe cleaned up a little it would run closer to where your laptop does. I'm saying I don't think it is the modem, more like the desktop machine's processing speed.

How would they connect though? Would cables have to be run from outside to the modem?
Your modem needs an input from the cable company. You will need to connect the modem to one of the coaxial hook-ups in your house. That gives the internet signal to your modem, then the output of your modem hooks into the machine that will host your wireless network.
