I will be painting my 71 camaro with PPG basecoat/clearcoat red with white "motion" camaro stripes. Because there is no stencil for these stripes I have to do them by hand which is going to take me hours I am sure. If I paint the red base how long do I have to layout the stripes and paint them before I would run into problems with the red base not being cleared? If I do it that way how long does the base have to dry before I can tape on it safely? Should I just paint the car red, clear it with a couple coats, then layout the stripes on the car the next day and then reclear the whole car? Its been 5 years since I have painted a car and I normally used PPG acrylic enamel with a hardener so I dont know the types of PPG base clear..can anyone recommend what line to use? I dont want cheap stuff but dont need the most expensive stuff either. This will all be over PPG K36 primer.

I'm not sure about PPG but Dupont chromabase has a 24 hour window to be cleared and you can safely tape on it in 30 minutes.PPG is probably similar. There are some PPG users here that will chime in soon i'm sure.
By the way Dave i started the resto on the 68 convertible i bought from you. I'll send you a link to some pics when i get them up if your interested.

The answers to your questions can vary somewhat depending on the product. It should have specific instructions on the label or spec sheets...

However, assuming you have applied the "normal" film build with the base coat and you've used the proper temp range of the reducers/additives for the colors, the base coat should be dry enough to gingerly begin applying stripe tape within 45 minutes to an hour. Most(but not all) basecoats can be clearcoated up to 24 hours after application without scuffing and reshooting.

You should have not problems at all timewise allowing the base to dry, taping off your stripes and clearing.

Thanks guys,
since this is a driver and seeing the other post on the Nason line that may be less expensive I think I am going to try that...sounds like I have enough time to get the stripes done so thats great. One other thing, I plan on using 3M masking tape, do I need to use a special tape so there is no residue left on the base coat? Or do I just tack rag the base before clearing?

Chris lets see those pics, glad you are going to get it done! I am sure its gonna be sweet.

PPG's DBU and higher end DBC plus Global all have that 24hr window. 24hrs is the industry standard pretty much.

We use PPG and the tape time is roughly 45 mins.
For masking the stripes I would use a fine line tape around the paint edges. Fine line will produce a straighter and chrisper line then regular masking tape.

Also something to note 3M makes or DID make 2 types of tape. The older white colored tape and the newer green tape. The green stuff has a better bend ability, sticks better. But Ive found its best the run the green tape arcoss your jeans first before sticking to fresh paint so it wont leave behind tape line tracks. The green tape has a stronger glue and somewhat more prone to tracks, if you remove the glue by running it across you wont have that problem.

As for PPG clears you have tons of choices. My favorite clears are 2042 and 2055. 2042 is a tad faster clear meaning it dries faster, but 2055 has that LOOK to it if you know what I mean, its the best PPG clear Ive sprayed hands down!!!
Anoher clear choice would be 2022, I have not used this clear but many PPG shop in my area use that clear since 2020(which I didnt care for)was axed.

A few clears to avoid for a complete would be 2082. That clear is made for jamming or doing say a hood and fender cause it cures so fast. Another would be DCU3032 which should be out on the market now, its even faster then 2082, has a sand/buff time of 1.5hr air dried  . If you were to panel paint this car then you could use either of those, 3032 being my choice...Eric

If you exceed the window on Dupont BC freshen it with a coat of 222S before you clear, if using PPG DBU freshen it with DBU500 before clear, DBC-DBC500 before clear, Global-D895 before clear. Although each of the paint manufacturers have suggested window times for clear application -they also have solutions for exceeding it. You will noticed improved gloss and better flow with your clear if you stretch the window and refresh. I have used all of the above mentioned products on major graphic and airbrush work and they work great. Also if you are doing alot of custom work seal off your initial base color with the midcoat clears and it will be easy to clean before topcoat clear is applied. Bob
