I just swapped a q jet for a 600 cfm edelbrock performer series carb. I cannot remember how the throttle cables were hooked up to the q jet and thus can't figure out how they hook up to the new carb. the car has what seems to be two seperate cables that go to the same side of the carb. One cable has a bulb type attachment that connects onto a small stud on the carb throttle...the other cable has a flat piece of metal on the end that has a hole in it the shape of a matchstick or a lollie pop. If you have any info please share. thanx.

One is for the throttle linkage, one for the transmission kickdown linkage. The throttle is supposed to be "off" when the top of the big brass-colored lever is facing the front, and wide-open when the top is facing the rear of the car. If you press the gas pedal, you will see that one of the cables pulls back - that's the throttle linkage, and attaches to the top part of the brass lever. the transmission kickdown linkage will get pulled toward the front of the car when you press the pedal, and it goes on the bottom of the big lever. You should have no pedal control of that cable - the throttle lever will pull it out for you as you press the gas pedal.

the kickdown linkage only has about one inch of play in it. I noticed that when the throttle gets to a certain point it becomes harder to push it and when you do the third and fourth barrell of the carb opens. should the kickdown switch be pulled that one inch at the same time as the third and fourth barrell open?

The kickdown linkage should have about 1-2" of movement, if I remember right, for a TH350, which I will assume is your transmission. Here's how you adjust the kickdown linkage:

1) First, determine how far the throttle lever goes with nothing connected.
2) Then, hold the throttle lever at WOT, and pull on the transmission kickdown linkage as hard as you can. The idea is that kickdown cable is pulled out as far as it goes when the throttle is at full position.
3) Adjust the kickdown linkage to be out all the way when the throttle is at WOT. Depnding on your setup, you may have to turn a plastic part, or adjust a bracket. Can't tell without seeing a picture.
4) Connect the th. lever / trans kickdown cable at this point (WOT / kickdown full out)
5) When you let go of the throttle now, you'' probably get slack on the trans kickdown cable, and the cable will not tighten up until the throttle is something like halfway to WOT. This is normal.

The tension on the throttle is normal after you open the primaries more than 65%. That carb has the secondaries open based on throttle lever position, and you're fighting a spring to open them. Also, if the kickdown linkage is hooked up prperly, you're also fighting the kickdown linkage. All normal.

Don't forget to connect a good throttle return spring!
