I've seen at least one here, maybe dale could chime in, I think he was the one that had the info/pic.
I've always understood the cowl tag was installed before the quarter panels or rear cove panel was installed and in this case could be, and probably is, the callout for the quarter panels punched for the necessary malibu rear emblems and lower paint divider studs and holes. I can surely see the possiblilty of a linesman making the mistake of grabbing the much more common malibu panel and making the first couple welds and yelling to the opposite side linesman so he can follow suit. You surely wouldn't want to brake the line to fix the problem. How many cars funnelled out that plant and just how many annomolies exist?? Much more common to see the wrong tach installed in a L48 or L78 car and these have been widely excepted.

So we can choose what anamoly we want to accept?

Without the docs or line workers giving up the info it will remain a disproven theory.

How long has this "L" thing been known? I mean, the docs missing from GM has been known for years. Why the lack of data and information?
Why havent any line workers come forward in the many years its been to offer some kind of info?

Can't answer any of those questions. The lack of first hand knowledge or gm documentation concerning the "L" code doesn't help either argument so why mention it?

Because the "SS" issue had been around for years...

I can't believe that someone who would know, a line worker, an office worker, wouldn't have been in a situation where they would be able to answer that question.

I can imagine them saying..."just look for the "L"

But that hasn't happened. I know there are some gm workers still around, and some of them have been vocal, telling stories of what went on then, but none mention the SS identification process?

Because an SS car was nothing important back then, just another car going down the line that never meant a darn thing to the worker. When you watch thousands and thousands of car go past you, you tune it out. It was a job and 99% of them only seen one little portion of the assembly process and likely never knew or cared what went on 10 ft from them. You did your job and kept you nose out of someone else. Put in 8 hrs and hit the bar.......Keep n mind back in those days there was also a lot of friction between the unions and GM management. Also the illiteracy rate was much higher in assembly plants and it was not unccomon for many works to not have a high school education...

I have a friend that worked at the Leeds plant back then and about all he can tell me is what pertained to his job which was smoothing out the quarter sail panel to top joint.

I really would like to believe that the "L" means "SS" but since it is nothing more than a theory I can't.
(Plus I'm from Missouri,the Show Me state.):D

Hi,

I need to first say that I am not very savvy when it comes to El Caminos, I mostly consult with friends, but I love them and I recently found a 1969 for sale and want to know if anyone can help me identify if it is real or fake SS. I have read on the cowl tags and engines, but are there other ways of being able to tell if the car is a real SS or a fake? I am enclosing a photo of the cowl tag if anyone wants to look at it for help. PLEASE HELP! Thanks
Here's a 69 in CHeyenne for you Elky lovers.

Well Mike, you might consider starting a new thread to ask your questions as this one is eleven years old and might not get the exposure you desire. The T1023IV is a 396/325HP originally installed in a full size Chevrolet. as far as the trim data tag goes, try researching the Chevelle Stuff web site.
