Get the numbers that are found on the head underneath your valve covers. Post them in a reply and some one will tell you what they are using the mortec website. If you want to look them up your self type in a google search for mortec

336781.....73-85...oval...OPEN...454, 118cc chamber, 256/114cc ports

thats my info from that site... im going to be running them on my 396 (bbored .060 over) are these ok? I was told I would not get any power at all out of them because of the port size. is this true?

Im not planning on racing the car, but i would like as much power as i can get.

thanks

781's are tasty heads. 781's and 049's are the open ovals of choice for many around here. They do have large cc chambers, shoot for around 10:1 for pump gas friendly performance. May require piston swap to get the compression you need (depending on cam selection). Dont mess with trading up for larger intake / exhaust valves. Stock will rock on just fine. Consider yourself lucky for having 781's, they are a great large oval port head that will perform nicely in the stock form. The guy that told you 781's wont work either A: DONT KNOW SQUAT or B: KNOWS SQUAT AND WANTS YOU TO GIVE THEM UP SO HE CAN RUN THEM. Keep the heads, all you will ever need for a 396.

Pair them heads up with a nice dual plane intake, the right hydralic cam, and some 1 3/4x3" headers, stock GM HEI ignition, and a good holley vac secondary carb and the next post you make will be "How do I keep from smokin my tires" :D
