I have a stock dash in my 70 Chevelle SS. I have two original ashtrays. When either ashtray is installed in the holder there is about 3/8" gap. When I remove either ashtrays the ashtray holder closes completely. Does anyone know if GM designed that for an ease to access the ashtray or do I have a unique problem???

Wow, based on the title I was expecting a major tech problem.
Have you tried to force it all the way in or inspect and lightly lube the track parts?

Not a unique problem.Seems that many fit that way. Also wondering what proper fix is, appears to be engineered that way.

If you have a factory ash tray they make the replacement springs. If the trays are aftermarket, they suck. I had to get the springs and do some engineering so the springs pull my aftermarket ash tray shut.

The springs for the ash tray have a point where they adjust position so it changes how they work when its open vs closed. If they were fixed position it would slam the tray closed and the springs would break in quick order

Bad springs is all I can think of.
