I have a '67 Chevelle with front and rear turn signals that light when the lever is moved up or down but they won't blink. I found the flasher and the harness has three wires; two blue and one black. One blue and one black wire end with a female two prong plug for the flasher. The third blue wire has a single female plug and I have know idea where it plugs in at. Could this be for a three prong flasher? Thanks, Gary

My "67" service manual shows two wires going to the flasher, one purple and the other brown. I thought the "67"' had two flashers, one pluged into the harness and installed in the retainer mounted under the dash and a seperate flasher that plugged into the fuse panel four the mandatory four ways in "67"? Did they just stop working? I think there may be a seperate chassis electrical manual for the car,I have a service manual but it doesn't go into a lot of detail. Someone here must have an electrical manual,if so I'm sure they could help you out. Good Luck

Re: Help! 66 Turn Signal Flasher Wiring

Thanks Don. They have never worked. I found the harness with no Flasher connected. I'm thinking this car has a '66 wiring harness because there are three wires, but the tricky part is, one blue and one black wire end with a female two prong plug for the flasher. The third blue wire has a single female plug. I'm wondering if a three prong Flasher would have a two prong plug and a single plug that attaches to it. The fuse box Flasher works fine. This two prong Flasher that I bought and installed in the harness makes the blinking noise but none of the lights blink. I'm thinking that this third wire is the final key that sends the blinking signal to the lights but don't know where to connect it to unless it needs a three prong Flasher.

I had a similarproblem with my '67... It turned out the turn signal switch was faulty and needed to be replaced... With a wiring diagram and a test meter, you can determine which wire goes where, and check for continuity...

As mentioned above, the two blue and one black wires sounds like the wiper switch wiring. The flasher should have the brown and Purple wires...

Also, both front and rear bulbs usually need to be working correctly on each side. Flasher works using the resistance thru the 2 bulbs to create the required heat, which activates the contacts, inside the flasher.

My 67 is as "Don B" states. One flasher in fuse block the other wired in, and under dash in-between ash tray and steering column. Purple and brown wires...

If you hear the flasher clicking then something in that circuit is drawing enough current to activate the flasher? As HOT WHEELS FAN stated the bulbs draw the current through the flasher causing it to work.I'm sure you tried switching the flashers since you said the four ways work as designed correct? This would confirm that the wiring to the bulbs and the bulbs themselves are good. Do your brake lights work properly? They are tied in with the turn signal switch.
The connector you'll be looking for is a molded connector with two wires,it is L shaped to fit the terminal location on the flasher.Should be a brown and purple wire.Even if your car has a "66" harness, that connector should be the same. Keep us posted.

Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to all you guys I found the brown and purple wires and traced them back to an old blue plastic flasher hidden way up between the steering column and ashtray. Replaced it and I now have working turn signals!!!! Thanks again!!!

P.S. Just as you guys mentioned, the blue and black wires were for the wiper motor. Thanks again!!!

1st of all make sure the exterior lamps are on the tail light position. Then turn on key to make sure the lights get brighter when using your turn signals. If you had a bad ground the lamp voltage is there but the ground will travel up the tail lamp circuit. That's why you turn on your tail lamps and then work your turn lever. Make sure the key is on .if all of the exterior frt and rear get brighter when working the lever. Put a turn flasher in it. It will be located usually in a Brackett clip close to the steering column so the driver can hear it. Don't put a hazard flasher in the turn the on off is different. hazard flasher works 4 bulbs at once. Turn flasher on works 2 bulbs at once. GM Dealer electrical technician for over 40yrs.
