I had a flexplate let go on my 427.
I replaced the flexplate and visually checked the trans pump on my 200-4R. Few days later the pump starts knocking...
So I removed the trans again, and the hub on the GN D5 converter was cracked.
The stock Gn converter was perfect behind the mild BBC, brake stalled to 2600 and flashed to a bit over 3k.
So I really just wanted a replacement GN converter.
Called around.
The reman'd GN stuff is expensive.
They are just a restalled stock converter...
So I ordered a restalled stocker from RoadRunner Converters in AZ.
I think it was $125 shipped.
I've done quiet a few WOT lockup's with it ( I wouldn't recommend that with a stock type single plate lockup converter) at 110+ mph when it goes from 3rd to 4th and locks up.
It performs as well as the GN converter did.
I usually don't believe in buying the cheapest converter out there, but ~$100-125 is the going rate for a stock reman so since the stock used GN converter worked so well I tried it out.
I've had enough heartache with high dollar converters that when I get a good unit for a good price I'm pretty happy.

I've also had good luck with Summit 2200 converters for a mild TH350/400 application as well as Hughes.
Hughes makes a nice unit and can do about anything.

Chris is making his own now, so I may have to try him out when I get a chance.

Thanks for the tip - Jake

One more quick ??

I noticed there is much mention of GN buick parts - like on CK performance site -

are there any fitment problems with chevy engines and chevy flexplates with GN parts like converters - and with GN specific internals and shift kits parts in "OG" code TH 2004r Trannies

No,
The 200-4R was installed behind most of GM's line, so it is very interchangeable, as most of GM's stuff is.

There are some differences on the valve body stuff, but most shift kits will work on a low performance trans as well as the factory performance stuff (GN's).
However there were some minor differences, and sometimes valve body kit design has an effect.
Chris is THE expert on 200-4R hydraulics. I've sought his expertise to correct others kits' problems.

Wow, this turned into an interesting discussion. Let me ask this question: If I contact CK for a tranny and converter (Turbo 400 built for 600+ HP, manual valve body and a 3200-3500 stall converter), what should I expect to pay in round figures ???? Of course, I will be asking the man himself.

Thanks all of you for the input.

the 650.00 i payed was for him to rebuild my tranny, total rebuild with a ati forward manual valve body, and a better sprag. for a converter i bought a 10" treemaster 3500 stall from ati 479.00 during there fall sale. guessing the fall sale pricing is still good . grovey

I have heard good things about Century Transmission, Trans king down in Galveston http://www.transking.qpg.com/. Also I'm running a tranny from Exners transmission. It has performed well and they have been helpful with info after the sale. These are all local tranny shops with great reputations within the local racing community. I hope it helps.
** Also I've heard that Transking builds some good converters also and they stand behind what they sell.

Texas 70 - not sure what Chris would ask, but I can tell you that he will offer you a good deal. Let us know what he says. Meanwhile - I emailed him about whether I need to upgrade converter or not. Good Luck

its nice to see that people benefit from our tech and products.if you are interested in our th400 please phone in monday and i will go over all of your options.718 784 4256.we are always willing to work with you on the pricing if you are purchasing a trans and converter together.it should also be noted that we install all of our transmissions in a test vehicle prior to shipping to ensure performance and quality.this verifies wide open throttle upshift points(custom calibrated to your engines maximum engine speed)as well as shift firmness and operating temp and pressures.also all of our th400s now include a NEWfactory deep pan .we have tested transmissions in stock for same day shipment in most applications.having developed our own line of valve bodies i can assure that we have spent years (honestly)revising calibrations etc.to perfect our valve bodies and this shows in the performance of our automatics.as far as a converter it will not need anything super expensive but will need anti ballooning plates if your drag racing or making over 500hp with a 11 inch or smaller diameter converter.if the valve body is an automatic shift with a functioning vaccuum modulator and a standard lenth pressure regulator spring with a .100" shim under it it will reduce the ballooning of the converter by reducing converter charge pressure at the point where it is fed into the converter between the pump gears and the front pump seal .for bobs application i suggest upgrading the torque converter if your going to be foot braking it or drag racing.periodic measurements of crankshaft end play(very easy from under the car)can verify if the converter is ballooning.
