What seems SOOO simple now, was really complicated for me. For the longest i've been total timing my motor only, and could get 38* all in at 2400 after the curve kit, much more than that had starting problems. Mallory ignitions come with 24* supposedly which would put my initial at 14*, and i really need 18* from what you guys have told me. After the light bulb finally lit in my brain, i tear the distributor apart again, and it actually had about 27* in it, which put my initial at about 10-11*. Set mechanical to 20*, initial at 18*, man let me tell you what a difference it made. Could only get about 5800 rpm or so out of it before, and was bouncin that bad boy off the rev limiter at 6400 though 1st and 2nd now. I'm so pumped, THANX FELLAS !!

Hey, Scott. Is your cam the Comp 282/282 solid? Any 1/8 or 1/4 mile E.T.'s to share?

Charles
Yah it's the solid, set at .022 both intake and exhaust. No times yet, i'll make it to the track one day !!

That's outstanding! Same thing with me - I just changed to the biggest bushing in my MSD to limit dist. advance to 18. Picked up an inch of vacuum and a much better idle.
Just getting it running - I hope I see the top end improvement you got!

Not to prove I'm an idiot, but could someone run this down for me? I'm not quite understanding what he changed.

Sure.
He changed his distributor so it wouldn't add as much mechanical advance.
After doing this he could increase his initial timing and end up with the same total timing.
Cars with decent cams run better with more initial than normal factory settings - 18
degrees being pretty common.

Reading the ignition write-up by John Hinckley explains a whole lotta stuff.
If you search there are copies of it on the forum.

I remembered where it is:
