I need to get the exaust done....I am considering having some straight pipes come off the headers bent upwards a little (to put the exaust closer to the car's underbody) and then have the mufflers sit avout where the back seat is and have them dump out just before the rear wheels of the car.

Any pros/cons to this?

You would come out cheaper buying the summit exhaust kit and route out the back past the bumper. If you don't get the exhaust out from under the car,at certain speeds there's a sound emited from the exhaust that will make conversation useless because you can't here a thing!

I drove my Camaro like that for a while, and IMO, it's ok for a race car but it's definitely not a good idea for a car you want to drive. The noise was absolutely horrible, as a matter of fact it was so darn loud that sometimes you couldn't even hear it, you could only feel it! It was somewhat bearable when cruising at 2000-2500 rpm, but when you leaned on it.... Some of my friends (those who didn't ride with me on longer trips...) thought it was cool, but it didn't take me long to decide to add tailpipes anyway. I was surprised by the huge difference those last feet of pipe really made.

You could try it, but make sure you have the mufflers located so it's easy to add tailpipes later!

Turn downs before the axle works great for me. 2.5" with and H pipe and 40 series flows. If you route it out in front of the wheels out the side of the car make sure you have some room between the tire and the end of the pipe. Too close and you can overheat your tires. It does resonate inside my el camino but its not unbearable. Maybe when I get too old, it will be.

Thanks for the input.

Just to let you guys know, right now for the exaust, I already have the mufflers (Dynomax Ultaflow) and they're the offset in/center out style.

I also have 2 pieces of straight pipe that bolt onto the ends of the headers and the mufflers are mounted onto the ends of the straight pipe (not welded on) and the ends of the mufflers are secured to the floor board braces via exaust straps.

I did this as a quick set up so we could hear the rockers clacking when we were adjusting the rocker arms. But the problem is the mufflers hang too low to the ground plus someone told me it's adding stress to the headers which will eventually break, despite the fact I have the ends of the mufflers secured.

So I'd like to keep the current mufflers, otherwise yeah I would opt for a muffler/tailpipe kit.

Also, any maybe it's me but I always though the exaust would have a little more free flow if it didn't have to go up and around the rear axle. Maybe not??

On another note I had also considered maybe in the future to back half this car but then again maybe not, though a tubbed Chevelle does sound cool I'm sure it's been done to death.
