On early small blocks (my 66 327) there is a plug on top of the water pump and another plug on the front of the intake (L-79 Intake), looks like a big block bypass. Would hooking this up make the engine run a little cooler? It does get hotter than I like now, up to 225 degrees.

Small blocks have an internal bypass. The water pump is made to also fit a Corvette with their strange cooling set up. The bypass is only needed when the thermostate is closed and will not effect your colling once it is open.

The L79 intake is a Corvette piece and L79's when installed in Chevelles and Chevy II's used the bypass hose. It couldn't hurt to hook it up and find out if it helps with your heating problem but I doubt it will make much difference.

I've got the bypass hooked up on my L79 because it's always been that way and that's the way the General made it. You certainly wouldn't hurt anything by hooking it up.
