It's obviously been too long since I've built a SBC motor!! I thought the #1 piston fires when the timing marks on the cam gear and crank gear are aligned, but it appears that that's actually TDC on the exhaust stroke and the spark goes to #1 when the cam mark is actually at the top on the gear. Is this right?? If not I can't figure out how to change it!! Also, just to double check, is the forward most lifter on #1 exhaust or intake??

Thanks!!

Yes that is right...When the marks are lined up number 6 will be at tdc of compresion stroke.

It's been awhile since I looked at a sbc head but I believe Exhaust valve is closest to the front
